Default I need some suggestions

I've decided to sell my ION privately, because I don't feel like getting screwed by dealerships.

BUT.....I have no idea when to put my car on the market. Here's the problem. I'm ordering my MINI in the middle of next month. The MINI takes 3 months to come in according to the dealer. Should I put my ION on the market right away?, which will ensure I have time to sell the car, but I could get stuck without a car for three months if the ION sells quickly. OR, should I hold off, and put the car on the market about a month before my MINI comes in? I wouldn't be without a car for too long, but I run the risk of not selling the Ion in time.

Keep in mind, It's going to be a pain not having a car. It's a neccessity, not a luxury. I'm not sure what the best thing to do is.

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance

...

Get it on the market asap before you lose any more value. Be prepared to invest in a bus pass... public transportation is your friend.

I say, you should actually put it on the market the day you pick the mini up.
You should have a down payment of some kind in cash anyway. Finance at the lowest rate you can find, and the simply send in the first year's worth of payments when the Ion sells.

My payments would be way too high though. I could only put down about $1,000 in cash. On a $20,000 car that doesn't even make a dent.

which is why you should trade the Ion in for the Mini, have a friend chauffer you around if you sell the Ion before the Mini arrives, or not buy a car you can't manage a downpayment on without trading in.

Heh, unfortunately $1000 down on a $20,000 car in this state wouldn't even pay the costs of registering it.

Nah, after working in the car business for a while, you see that trading is the stupidest thing someone can do. The dealerships don't give you even close to what it's worth.

Yes, you get less, but it's much less hassle for 99% of the people. Stupid is relative to the person & situation. IMO, trading a 2 year old car in for another new one is stupid. It's the typical American societal problem.....when you lose the slightest interest in something that is fully functional & served the basic purpose, you throw it away instead of making due with it......basically a wasteful society (a friend just got back from Europe & confirmed this....Europeans pay more for basic items, but they use the a lot longer-until they are not functional anymore). No wonder most of the rest of the world despises the USA. Again it's relative & only an opinion. But we've been through this in another thread.

Good luck in finding the money for the Mini. They are a cool looking car....I like the grey & black ones that I've seen around here.

Here's what I'm gonna do.

I'm going to order the MINI, then I'm going on vacation for two weeks. When I get back, I'll wait about a month, then put the Ion on the market.
I should be able to sell it in two months.

If It's getting close to my MINIs build date, and I don't think I'll be able to sell the Ion for as much as I was hoping, I can just cut back on the options on my MINI. As of right now, I think I added almost every option to the MINI besides the nav system.

It's not a matter of being able to afford the car, it;s just a matter of timing.

Put it on the market asap. You work at a dealership. If you get lucky and sell it early, you can always by a POS trade-in for $500. Dealerships don't even want that stuff. It usually goes to wholesalers. I once bought a $500 car because it was cheaper than 2 plane tickets. And good running beaters are very easy to get rid of when you need to.

you'll have to let us know how that mini drives. They look like a ton of fun, i've heard they have some serious zip to 'em! I'd loooove to drive a manual mini, you can zig-zag through just about any traffic in that tiny little package.

I tried selling a 2002 AWD V6 Vue locally for a month before trading it in (was still under factory warranty for 2 months). I feel most people like the ease of buying $10,000 plus vehicles at the dealer because of the one stop trade in, financing, registration that private sellers cant offer.

After factoring in the money I saved on sales tax on the new Redline Ion I purchased ($932) I came within $268 of my advertised asking price of $12,500 (I received KBB trade in @ good for $11,300).

The question I have is are you more likely to get a better trade in when trading in a saturn at a saturn dealer?

Begin by gauging interest on these boards. If I'm not mistaken, you've kept your ION up very well, and it was Saturn serviced, etc. Chances are, someone may want it on these boards.

Another thing to do is eBay. IONs are just now becoming more commonplace, and you should be able to write up a good description and put it on eBay. If you do eBay it, make sure you include lots of nice pictures, and use correct grammar and spelling. You're knowledgable. Maybe even put up a post in classifieds saying it's on eBay.

Good luck

Question Re: I need some suggestions

I am going to ask the question that I am sure a lot of others (including your parents) would like to ask......why are you,as an 18 year old highschool student even thinking of getting rid of a 2yr old car and buying another new car ? Have you won the lottery or something ?

Sorry...that is 2 questions.

I am not sure if this applies to where you live, but the Detroit area is a high volume market. We have a number of vehicle wholesalers around here that can give you more money for the vehicle than a dealer would. Heck, my Saturn dealer gave me the name of a wholesaler and I ended up getting a few hundred more $$$'s than what his used car manager was willing to give me. The whole process to sell the vehicle took one phone call and he cut a check for the vehicle within 15 minutes of me pulling up to the building.
