Default Summary of GM plans for Saturn

"FUTURE PRODUCTS: GENERAL MOTORS -- Car comeback in high gear for GM
Lutz leads rollout of new models, redesigns

By Dave Guilford
Automotive News / August 19, 2002

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
SATURN

Vue: The 3.0-liter V-6 will be optional on the 2003 fwd Vue.

Ion: The Ion will replace the S series in the 2003 model year. The Ion sedan debuts this fall, marking the North American arrival of GM's new Delta small car architecture. The coupe follows about six months later.

L series: The car will be freshened for the 2003 model year. Engineering improvements were aimed at reducing noise, vibration and harshness.

Epsilon vehicle: GM officials say Saturn is in line to get a new mid-sized vehicle off the Epsilon architecture for the 2006 model year. But it won't be a sedan, and it won't be called L series.

Sport wagon: Saturn is tentatively slated to get a sport wagon off the Lambda architecture in the 2008 model year. The vehicle would be larger than the Vue sport wagon. "

With this road map for Saturn, there's not much to get excited about.

Incrementally size-up the platform is NOTHING NEW! All others are already DONE that.....

What's the innovative stuff Saturn was once being proud of? Polymer will be soon gone, DIY unfriendly, Drum brakes dominate, beam-axle suspension, sheet-metal body, mediocre HP numbers Powertrain.....what else? :o:

It could be worse. Now that Lutz is de-cladding the Pontiacs GM could use up all their surplus cladding on Saturns!

This article was mostly old news, but (maybe) it clears up the time-table.

Since when does the VUE = a "sport wagon"?

Yeah, thanks, Jim - VUE is an SUV, not a "sportwagon" lol. Nothing sporty about high ground clearance wannabe trucks. LW is much closer to that moniker than VUE could ever hope to be.

And let's hope they're wrong about the L replacement timetable...2006?! You mean they're going to get a two year old Chevy rebadge ?!

Default General Insanity

I honestly hope that GM has more planned for Saturn. Maybe this is a fake time table released to lull the automotive public into a doze, making it easier to shock them with new products.... Or not.

How about this as a time table?

2003: 3.0 liter V6 power uprated to 240 HP, 250 lb.-ft. of torque

2003: Saturn Ion WRC version released. 300 lbs. lighter, turbocharged inline four, optional six speed, independent suspension, all wheel discs.

2003: Vue off-road package, Vue on-road performance package
mid-2003: L performance upgrade
2004: Saturn Quad Coupe deployed
late-2004: Saturn GT roadster
2004: Vue platform overhaul, intensive de-bugging
2005: L redesign, including sport wagon and sport sedan. Debut of L400, equipped with six speed and turbocharged V6.

Dazed

in case no one noticed, Saturn has been assimilated into GM. they originally where a separate entity with their own engine and platform. now we get the L series and Ion that share powertrain and platforms. goodbye Saturn

Just so you all know....Automotive News uses the term "sportwagon" quite freely and applies it to any SUV/Crossover type of vehicle that doesn't have a longitudinal engine and rear wheel drive. I don't think anyone in the county would know what you were talking about it you started discussing the Saturn, Ford, Honda, and Acura sportwagons (VUE, Escape, Pilot / CRV, MDX).

Sad, isn't it? But if we don't look at this so negatively, Saturn spirit is still there but diluted. Even though Saturn got to share platform and powertrain across, at least Saturn is still the very FIRST to utilize these rapid-available technologies. Ecotec-4, VUE V6 head, CVT (aka VTi) and Electric Steering......though they're not invented from Saturn shop, they're the first to put into usage.

VUE may be simulated as Sport-wagon.....just throw in a nice set of Lower sport springs, bigger wheels but lower profile tires. Body-kit wrap around and Supercharge that V6. Will be one impressive Sporty Wagon.

Isn't the VUE technically classified as a wagon anyway? Insurance companies don't consider it a truck, that's why insurance is so cheap.

I read an article or thread somewhere that stated that GM may not put the Cavalier/Sunfire or whatever their replacements will be onto the Delta platform. I'll hunt for it and try to find it to post.

If this is true and GM uses another platform for the small sedans/coupes, what else will be built off of Delta platform?
