Default 2300 RPM at 55mph?

I have a 94 SL2 that acts as though it is stuck in performance mode. No codes are being thrown, but auto tranny is shifting hard, and slipping between 4th to 3rd. RPMs are at 2300 at 55. I was hoping that a code for the TSS would come up. Any ideas?

How many miles on the car? When was the transmission service last done? RPMs are at 2300 at 55mph sounds normal.

if the tranny has over 75k miles on it, and has never been serviced, it should not be serviced....according to Saturn of Asheville's Service Technician. you might be able to get away with swapping out the valve body and end nuts.

Owner's manual for a 94' specifies fluid and filter changes EVERY 30K MILES.

I think the advice adhsc2 is getting is something I've seen floating around too but, what I've seen refer's to flushing not changing the fluid. I"m with Wolfman, as long as it's still rolling changing the fluid won't hurt and it might help.

i agree, but changing the fluid and servicing the transmission are two different things. if you dont change the filter and fluid every 30k, you are just stupid. its cheap and takes literally 15 minutes.

+1 on the last 2 posts...

Changing fluid/filter is so easy its a crime if you get lazy and dont do it!!

I also agree if the fluid has been neglected, leaving it in there isnt helpful!!
What is needed is fresh fluid and filter, and a more frequent change interval.
Trannies that "die" after fluid changes were doomed anyway, by not changing fluids..

In other words, change the damn fluid, quit screwing around.....

I've changed the oil and filter recently. The car has 156K on it. I recently had to replace the head as the old owners cracked the head. At 65mph, the rps are at 3,000. That just seems excessive to me. It also is making the car run hot. All of my other Saturns run at much lower RPMs, but then I haven't had a DOHC before. Performance mode doesn't seem to act any different. Should I notice a difference in the shift pattern and or RPM?

I just looked at my RPMs at 55, and in 5th gear that's about what I'm at (about 2300 RPM @ 55 mph).

That's about what I get too in my DOHC... about 3000rpms at 70, though.

3,000 does seem a little high for 65 mph. My DOHC does about 2700 rpm at that speed.
