I think everything will work except the parking brake cable. RockAuto should have one that will work (you'll need a 98 SW cable for a 4 wheel disc car) if you don't want to dig out a junkyard cable.

Everything is bolt on and go, The only pain is the parking brake cables, You need a set from a 96-98 SL/SW, A salvage yard is where I got mine....

How hard is it to do a rear disk brake conversion if you don't have a donor?

What parts would you need?

My 1997 SL2 (RIP) have 4 wheel disc. My new 99 SL2 has rear drums.

Thanks.

Your going to need the caliper's to start with. That's the most expensive part of all.

Also:

Emergency Brake Cables. (2) Same length for each.
Brake Hoses (Optional)
Hub's (depending on condition of ones installed right now)
Rotors
Brake Pads
Dust Shields (You won't be able to find these without a donor)

Go to Rock Auto here:
http://www.rockauto.com/catalog/raframecatalog.php
for the best prices.

I just did this last weekend and the brakes are more solid now.

Read this for more info:

It is a nice upgrade. I'd recommend if you have the cash to also upgrade the lines to SS and the pads. The largest benefit to the rear discs is pad selection.

Doing a JY upgrade is pretty darn cheap. If you get good pulls it will be far less than new and with the difference in price you can do both better pads and lines.

I would recommend buying new rotors. They are cheap and JY rotors tend to be rusty. and aren't worth machining.

Here are some photos of the drum to rear disc conversion.

They are in order.

I used a wire brush and brake cleaner after removing the original hubs.

Also painted the dust shields (junk yard item) as well as the calipers.

I tapped the drum around the diameter to get it off. Then removed the springs and hardware of the drum setup as well as the hoses and cables.

After loosening the fasteners of the hub, I also tapped them with a hammer and same piece of short 2 x 4 wood piece to remove.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Also. Make sure to install a new set of emergency brake cables as the ones stock with the drum brake setup will not work.

See here..

http://www.saturnfans.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=197491

This will take care of your parking brake cable (aka emergency brake cable) installation..

Best Wishes!!

Nice write up. I have two 3rd gen SC2s that I would like to convert.

Is replacing the hub/bearing required? Or just something you decided to do?

Mine were still in good shape. I just wanted new ones to make the setup "look new". I put the used ones away in case I need them in them future.
Just make sure to clean them up as well as the bore prior to installation.

ok. thats what I thoughts. One of my SC2 cars came with ABS. I thought there might be some conversion issue getting those hubs to work with the early rear disks.

Also are there any differences on the early rear disk set-ups? can you just pick out any year S-series that had rear disks?

My car is a '96. The doner was a '98.
I think '98 was the last year for the rear discs for the S-Series as an option. Up until '98 Im thinking that all the ABS Saturns had the rear disc brake set-up.

They should all interchange between model years.

The only specific item your going to need is the parking (emergency brake) cables as they are different for different years and wheel base differences.

I knew that about the cables. I was planning to either order new cables, or find out which year/model had the same wheel base as the 3rd gen SC cars and hunt for those in the yards. Since I have two identicle cars, I can save some effort on research (anyway). And both cars are due for a rear brake job. So I would much rather put the effort into a disk conversion vs fooling around with drum brakes. Comming from a background working on vintage mustangs, I am totally through with working on drum brakes.

'97 SL1 w/ABS = drum rear brakes. I believe it was determined that in '95 or '96 the SOHC's started getting drums no matter what so your best bet is looking at DOHC's with ABS.

Also you will need rear park brake cables from a 96-88 Disc equipped car you can get these pretty cheap out of the junkyard. All ABS Saturns didnt come with Disc, 98 WAS the last year for the option.
