2004 ION-1 Sedan
Heart Will a 2005 2.2 swap to a 2004 2.2?

Hey guys will a 2005 (mfg date 11/2004) automatic 2.2 sedan swap into a 2004 2.2 ion level 1 automatic sedan with no compatability issues? I think the 2006 and up 2.2 wont swap into the 2004 ion sedan with no compatability issues.

I found a spare engine in the salvage yard with 22814 miles on it. VIN# 1G8AL52F45Z130063

The long block should swap in... you need to use the intake/exhaust manifolds from the 2004... did the 2005 car have secondary air injection?

good question about the secondary injection . How or what would I look for to find out if that engine is equipped with secondary injection?

Easiest thing to find that signals secondary air injection is the extra hose from the airbox...

I don’t know if it would make the head incompatible with a 2004 that didn’t have it, but I know that some(or maybe most/all) 2004s didn’t have it and therefore don’t have the electrical connections to run it... same with the electric TB and the MAF sensor

Both cars being automatic brings up an interesting thought... are the flexplates the same? The 2004 automatic sedan used the AF23 trans and the 2005-up used the GM 4T45E...

Thumbs Up Re: Will a 2005 2.2 swap to a 2004 2.2?

Good thinking on my 2004 Ion, I have the Asian Af23 transmission. i would have to run the donor car VIN# and see what transmission it was equipped with.

Does the 4t45 transmission interchange with the asian transmission with no modification what so ever? direct bolt on and go including converter and fly wheel?

thanks for the info.

The 4T45 will bolt into your car provided you use the correct converter and flexplate, HOWEVER your car isn’t wired to run the 4T45... would have to make significant wiring changes to make it work...

Unless your AF23 is failing I don’t see any good reason to attempt to 4T45 swap your car, unless maybe you were racing and needed a trans which would take a higher power output (the 4T45 can be built to take around 450whp)

Don’t get me wrong, the engine itself is nearly a plug and play for and if you take time to swap your intake manifold over to use your stock cable TB it is (provided it doesn’t have SAI) but the trans isnt
