Default Upgraded to leather steering wheel; now wheel is off center

Not a major problem, just an observation.

I bought a factory leather steering wheel off a 97 SC2 Coupe from the local Pick-N-Pull for $9.50 to replace the standard wheel on my 95 SL1.

Easy upgrade after renting a puller from Auto Zone.

I noticed after the installation that the steering wheel is slightly off center to the left when driving straight on a level road. Prior to swapping wheels, the original wheel was perfectly centered.

I guess the manufacturing tolerances are not that close on Saturn steering wheels.

Cheap easy upgrade!

I forgot to mention that the steering wheel only goes on one way because the steering wheel shaft has square sides.

I have had a steering wheel off on a 2000 and a '97. The shaft wasn't square. I'd like to see a pic of this square shaft. That said, in both cases, the round spline the wheel went on had one tooth that as longer than the others. You can't reorient the wheel there. Get an alignment.

If the car is not pulling one way or the other when going down the road and the alignment seems okay, I don't know how but there is supposed to be a simple adjustment you can make to center the steering wheel. Have a look through this thread----------

That thread is talking about an alignment adjustment. If you are willing to go and start jacking around with the orientation of your tie rod ends, go ahead but, it's not simple and it's ill advised IMO. It's your tires.

Thanks for the info, BarnOwl. Nope, I'm going to leave well enough alone and live with the crooked steering wheel until I need an alignment. The car is driving so nice and straight right now, I'm not going to risk screwing it up. Thanks again,

Jerry
