2008 Astra XR
Default new member needs help

hi everyone. im currently working on my neighbors 2008 saturn astra xr .
she bought with 35,000 miles and it currently has 70,000.
she brought to me, with check engine light on and a noisy engine noise, more like knocking similar to a diesel engine.
P0068
P0011
got these codes, check the MAF sensor for first code, noticed it had K&N filter
cleaned it , very very light oil on filter, clean sensor.
second code , pulled the solenoid from intake side and noticed it did not have the screens that i have heard on here its supposed to have, exhaust solenoid didnt have either.
replaced solenoid with new one , fresh oil change with filter
reset codes, and BOOM
still same problems, same codes, still sluggish take off, and still loud knocking noise.
remove valve cover, because it sounds like lifter is making that loud noise.
but could not identify problem.

please need help. i know what im doing , i can work on cars and fix them, but sometimes i get caught up like this time.

btw . before working on car, when on start up is when knocking sound started
but would go away then back when warm
now , when start up is fine , but knocking sounds come back little at first then continuously after warm up and sets fault code back on

is the purge valve supposed to make so damn loud noise as well?

REWARD EXCELLENCE!

Maybe timing belt? slipped a cog and valves and pistons are tapdancing on each other..engine may self-destruct any moment?

"knocking"- mechanical like piston slap or more detonation type ? oil register on the dipstick? compression check all around?

doesnt sound like piston slap or detonation. hard to describe, sounds like loud
"tick-tick-tick-tick-......."

was gonna start looking into possible skipped tooth on timing belt, inspect belt adjuster and check if cams and crank match at TDC.

removed top timing cover and started engine, and intake cam gear looked like it spins a little "wobbly"?
check engine came back on reading 3 codes when before i was just only getting 2 codes; P0011, P0068.
now im getting P000A. engine position system performance, bank 1

i replaced the camshaft position actuator solenoid. the solenoid allows the oil to enter the actuator that is able to change the timing of the camshaft up to 20 degrees.......... where is the actual actuator?

Hi,

My car had the same symptoms (sounded like a diesel, loss of power).
The dealer replaced the Intake Solenoid sensor part # (55567050).
This was covered under the powertrain warranty. Not sure this pertains to a 2nd owner.
Is this the part you replaced?

Did you check the condition of the spark plugs? Know the history of replacement?

My 08 Astra XR is having similar issues with miss firing....was told I need new spark plugs and new coil packs at $700 from dealer? I get a lot of choppy acceleration though, so not sure this is the right fix - hoping to hop onto your thread here and get some help. PC0304 is the code that's getting thrown.
Anyone???

When a dealer recommends both plugs and the coil pack, it sounds to me like they're just chucking parts at it -- unless the plugs are badly worn to begin with. If they install the coil pack and it still doesn't solve the issue, don't fall for the old "your car needs plugs and a coil pack and (something else)..."

If they are certain that the coil pack is the cause of the problem, you should know that you can purchase one aftermarket for a lot less, and it only requires a few basic tools to swap out yourself.

Did IamPlanB work it out???

My 2004 Saturn VUE Redline is doing the same thing and the codes it registers says all my injectors are miss firing which did not pan out when they checked it.

It ticks at start up and then warm up and be fine but a knocking noise will present itself when idling after running for awhile. It appears to be on the left side (hood open looking in).

Someone help?
Thanks
