Default 2003 Vue shakes when the heater switch is on.

I have a 2003 Vue (2.2). When I turn on the heater switch, the vehicle starts to idle very rough and the whole vehicle shakes. It only does this when i am stopped. But when I am driving and the RPMs are higher, it is ok.

You might want to make sure your battery is fully charged, and if it is, you might want to have the alternator output checked. If both are OK you need to turn something non-essential off when engine is at idle.

You probably realize if you put excessive electrical load (blower, lights, window defrost) on the alternator - with the engine at idle - it can't generate sufficient power to meet demand, and will draw the extra needed current from the battery.

If fact, the GM service manual advises the alternator will not keep up with a near-maximum electrical load if vehicle speed is under 15 MPH.

An easy way to determine when you're using more power than the alternator is providing (at night) is by increasing engine speed. If the lights get brighter, you are using all the power available from alternator and also leaning on the battery for the difference.

In your case it sounds like power is so low there might not be much remaining for the ignition and fuel delivery system.

2003 VUE 3.0L
Default Re: 2003 Vue shakes when the heater switch is on.

With the selector in the floor register position, turning on the fan also turns on the AC compressor, which is causing the extra load on the engine. There is a system that gives the engine a little more throttle to compensate for the compressor that perhaps is not working right in your VUE. Try turning the fan off when it's running rough to see if that stops it - this will confirm that it's the AC causing it and that you need to have it looked at to see what can be done to make it work like it's supposed to. Hmmm...lots of dangling prepositions in that rather awkward sentence.
