1997 SW2
Default Rear liftgate latch on a Gen 2 SW2

After some months of looking, I recently found a (temporarily???) GOOD replacement part at the local JY for the rear liftgate latch on my 1997 SW2. The OEM one has caused periodic trouble for years with symptoms like:

1) partial unlatching, leaving the liftgate ajar but not fully openable or closeable

2) the electronic release actuator-- utilized by the RKE and the driver's floor release lever -- would often activate, but then stick in the fully extended position. This made it impossible to latch the liftgate until 5 or 10 attempts caused the actuator to come unstuck

3) the switch that triggers the interior cargo light is integral to the unit. The switch fried itself from getting frequently toggled off and on in the "liftgate ajar" mode

I did relube the latch and actuator, and that helped a bit (problem is worse when it's cold), but it still occured with some persistency.

Anyway, I took a few pics of the latch assembly and the inside and outside of the actuator in case others experience these problems and want to see what the parts look like before they disassemble the liftgate to get at them.

From looking at the picture, can others determine if:

a) the Gen 3 SW latch is an improvement on the Gen 2 design and is it interchangeable? The Gen 1 latch is not.

b) is the latch on the Gen 2 SL2s similar, and does it use the same actuator? Perhaps folks can swap that subcomponent in if it's causing a problem.... The SW2 actuator is fairly similar to the door lock actuators, but has a different shape/packaging.

c) is there a source for buying just the actuator subcomponent? (originally, Rockwell Int'l part # 334250) It would be nice to be able to buy these items for less than the $100 for the whole latch assembly.
