Post GM to end production of ION at Spring Hill at end of 2006

http://media.gm.com/servlet/GatewayS...74&docid=20772

See GM will invest millions and then close a plant. Who knows maybe they will change their minds. They spent millions as did local govt near me and they got tax breaks and then they closed a factory

What is "plant/line #1?" It doesn't sound like they are closing the entire plant. Maybe they are stopping vehicle production and keeing the powertrain unit there?

That's heartbreaking. When I toured the plant in 1997, the tour guide proudly referred to Saturn as a "hundred-year car company," meaning they'd still be around in a century. I think of all those workers in rural Tennessee and wonder what they'll do next.

Holy s**t!

That really, really, really sucks for those people that moved to TN for this opportunity. A very young plant, but too far from the supplier base. Of course everyone saw the Doraville plant coming a mile away.

With Spring Hill and St. Catharines closing, where will they build the Ecotecs and 2.8L/3.6L HF V6s, not to mention the LS2 and LS4 V8s?

...

Hold on, I reread the article. It looks like only Line 1 is closing at Spring Hill, not the whole plant. Phew!

Like spencerb said what is closing the line? I just saw Spring Hill. Saturn was suppose to get a 400 million upgrade starting this month. So saves GM some big $$ I guess

Isn't 'Line 1' the Ion? And, if it is, weren't we already told that the Ion was moving to Lordstown, Ohio to be assembled on the same line as Cobalts?

I bet it is, and if so, you're right, we knew they were moving the Ion to Lordstown a long time ago to build it steel-bodied alongside Cobalts.

Does anyone know where the Outlook is going to be built?

Wow, that's a shocker! Didn't think GM would even think of closing such a new, modern facility when there are so many older plants. But hey, I guess it's cheaper to hire Mexicans to build cars, or maybe open a few more plants in China! I think with all the money that this move will save, the CEO deserves a bonus of at least several million dollars!

GM said the assembly plants that will close are in Oklahoma City, Lansing, Mich., Spring Hill, Tenn., Doraville, Ga., and Ontario, Canada.

This ap article says nothing of losing a shift at Spring Hill, it says the plant will close at the end of 2007.

The VUE and ION are made on the same production line. They just each make frequent detours. At least that was my observation when I visited the plant.

I'm guessing that this means we are losing the ION line or the ION/VUE line. I have read nothing that implies the Spring Hill powertrain facility will close.

USAtoday.com says Plant/Line 1 end of 2006..Perhaps the remainder is closing after the current run of the VUE is over...and the replacement will likely be built in Korea with all it's sisters

I think I'll have to make a special effort to go to next year's trip to Spring Hill..

I read that as the "Line 1" will end. I do not read that as the powertrain facility or parts making ability of spring hill to end.

Agreed. I should have attended the SaturnFans Homecoming. Seems like that's the final hurrah for what was.

I'm hoping I can tour the plant before anything bad happens. I'm only 19 and I'm a college student with no money so I better get a job and start saving now if I ever want to get to see it.

What parts other than the engines do they make a Spring Hill? I read that GM plans to move most of it's plants overseas over the next decade.

They're closing Spring Hill and leaving Lordstown open?

No wonder GM has so many problems. One hand doesn't know what the other is doing.

Spring Hill is slated to lose some of its production capacity by closing one of its assembly lines by the end of 2006.

Actually Lordstown made some work rule concessions to get Colbolt production. Sounds like the old Saturn.
