Default Ac bypass ?

I have a saturn vue 2006 3.5l v6, i dont really care about having ac, only the life of the compressor so my belt doesnt pop. Can i install a shorter belt to bypass the compressor all together ? Or is there something i can do that will preserve the compressors life span ? My condenser has a leak and i have no refrigerant in the system. How Can i get away with just not having ac but continue to safely drive ?

AC Compressors only spin when the compressor clutch is engaged. The clutch only engages when there is sufficient pressure in the system and the AC switch is on.

Unless your clutch is seized, the compressor will not turn, and all you will have is a big idler pulley. The only thing that will wear out is the pulley bearing, and it will wear same as the rest of accessory pulley bearings.

If you want to be sure, look at the compressor pulley with the engine running. the triangular plate on the outside should be stationary.

In my 30 years of driving many very used cars, I only saw a seized AC break a belt once (not my car). That car was likely in far worse shape than yours, it was literally held together with duct tape.

Even though the refrigerant is gone and the systems been exposed to moisture the compressor wont even kick on, regardless of if i turn the ac on or not and it is just going to free spin as a big pulley unless the bearing goes out, thats what your telling me, correct? Just worried because i know acid and sludge can form but if i have nothing to worry about aside from just losing A/C im not going to spend any money on it.
