Default Bolt on hood struts

Took this from herpfreaks on sixthsphere.com for those of you without access.

Hood struts are from a 99 F150.
Larger bolts are from a 99 Chrysler 300.
Smaller bolts are from an 01 Buick LeSabre.
Enjoy !

Yes. I used the back bolt on the hood, and the one in the fender is off by about an inch. You just compress the strut a little, and it goes right in.

What are the bolts called? Ball studs? Would an advance auto have these parts or are they dealer only?

I'm definitely interested in doing this, every other car I've owned had hood struts..

A bit on the expensive side, but a very good product (you get what you pay for). I've had mine for about a year now--the only problem is that I wish I had installed it sooner.

Obviously junkyard parts are going to be cheaper, and may work just as well, but most of these struts have a limited lifespan. I'd rather pay a bit more for the assurance that it will last a long time, and the convenience of a vehicle specific kit.

A single strut may seem a bit unbalanced/asymmetrical, but it holds the hood just fine, and it's nice to have clear access to the passenger side of the engine compartment.

I have the Redline part and agree completely with PCR. That being said the Ford truck used parts is a very nice low cost option for another approach.

See, it looks to me like the Redline part is in the same spot as the prop rod. I don't like that spot, it sometimes gets in the way.

Rock Auto has the struts as low as $12.99 each. Grab the bolts from the pick and pull, and order the struts here;

The redline is much further down on the hood than the prop rod. It is about a foot up from the hinge pivot on the fender and about 2 foot on the hood.

Where you place the strut is a function of strut strength, open length and closed length. A short closed length strut will require a high holding force to hold the hood open when the lever arm is short.

How well does the cheap version actually operate? Does it work like it should be there or is it a little funky?

works perfectly. get the bolts from the yard, and order new struts from Rock auto if you're concerned about getting worn struts. I really like how they are completely out of the way too.

Shot in the dark here, but would anyone know a good replacement for the 99 Chrysler 300 bolt? Amazon and eBay yield the incorrect part, my junkyard had 1 Chrysler 300 like this but had no hood. Anyone know the specific part number who have done this?

Found the Chrysler 300 bolts, harder than I thought to find one of these in a JY that wasn't destroyed to bits. Really great mod.

This seems like a fun mod to do one weekend. How hard are the parts to come by in the junkyard? And are there other cars they can come from other then the 3 listed in the original post?

After comparing the bolts from the 2005 Chrysler 300 to the ones in the original photo and the ones I have on my SL2, the 05 ones are different. They're shorter, I'm not sure they would work for this application unfortunately.

I came across a post somewhere which outlined the part numbers to order everything from McMaster-Carr. Upper bolt with ball, lower bolt with ball and the right size strut. I can't find the post though.

I've also read that the rear hatch strut from a Honda Del Sol is a perfect match. Here's the post >> Hood Struts. Note that they mount the lower bolt differently by drilling a hole for it and they have to modify the pinch weld for clearance.

Here is the photo from the post ....

Thanks, that's very kind of you to offer - but I also have a set of the bolts already

Somewhere in the garage . . . I really should clean it up next spring, now that I theoretically have more time.

I also bought some of the lift struts at the JY but I think I'll buy a new pair when I get ready to do this. I want to paint those bolts first. . . one set came off a white car and they are painted, so they would stand out quite a bit on a red car
