Default Corroded Pipe for Thermostat and Housing?

So heres the deal: My mechanic has my vue apart and is trying to replace the thermostat... However and I am not clear on what he's describing, there is a pipe coming from the block thats corroded and he cant get the thermostat out of there with out cutting it... Help?? Any ideas?? Thought? Diagrams..I am 2400 miles away and just had a bad car wreck today and my mercedes got totaled, so I am sorta stranded here right now until that gets solved, but now I reall need the VUE fixed and fixed right...

If I'm not mistaken, L300 3.0L V6 engines are the same as Vue 3.0L V6 engines so the thermostat, housing, and extension outlet pipe running to the front of the engine should be in the same place. If my presumptions are correct then there's one bolt holding the extension pipe from engine vibration, the oil dipstick clamp? See if you can talk to your mechanic to free the extension pipe. The pipe simply slips over the t-stat housing outlet and seals with two simple O-rings. Once the oil dipstick clamp bolt is removed the extension pipe is free to remove. Corrosion won't weld the pipe to the t-stat housing if I'm not mistaken. Your mechanic may not see this clearly.

I replaced my t-stat several years ago.................

You might want to get another mechanic.
There's 1 bolt that holds the T'stat Housing Extension Pipe.
After removing the bolt, it unplugs from the T'stat Housing - with some wiggling.
(2 O-rings at the arrow)
You then have to remove the Intake Manifold to unbolt and remove the T'stat Housing.

You might caution him about the tab on that Ext Pipe - seems it breaks off more often than not. Someone here suggested tightening that one bolt before torquing down the T'stat Housing.
