Mud flaps ?????

I am wondering what do the mud flaps look like on the Saturns I have a Pearl White 98 SC2. I am looking to getting some. But I have not seen them on any Saturns yet. Does anyone have any experience on putting them on? The people at Saturn says they look like they are molded on the car and they are hard to install. I like to do everything to the car if I can, but a few things I will refuse to do.

I had the dealer install the Saturn mudflaps on my SW2 in 1993. They fit fine but are black. This is not too noticable on a dark car (mine is original Blue Green) but I'm not sure they would look good on a Pearl White car (my favorite color, by the way). Of course you could have them painted, but I think that would be EXPENSIVE (especially in Pearl). They are held on with screws, so I guess it depends on how comfortable you are making holes in your car, whether this is something you'd want to do yourself. Perhaps the parts department will let you borrow a set to have someone hold in place so you can check the fit and looks?

I think they *help* keep splashes off the car, but they probably also lower the drag CF slightly. I tried to watch for any change in gas mileage after installing them but I did not notice any. (Probably a lot less than a roof rack, for example.)

I can't say if I would buy the mudflaps for my next Saturn or not. I would probably try going without them first and see how dirty the car gets without them.

Thank you Jim. Does you car keep alittle cleaner if it rains or if you go through water.The sales person said they almost look like they are kinda of molded on the wheel well. Thank you again.

I had them put on my coupe. It is the yellow and black so they look fantastic on it. I believe they help some with cleanliness although they aren't miracle workers. I also believe the mounting is just unscrewing the screws for the inner fender and putting these in place and replacing the screws, no cutting, welding, drilling, etc. required. I could be wrong as I didn't look too closely before getting them. On my last car that's how it was though. You can sometimes get them off ebay etc. for about $40 which is way way better than dealer. You might want to check into that and try them out and if you really like them you could always replace them with a brand new set if you felt the need. Good luck.

Saturn brand mud flaps use preexisting holes it is only necessary to remove some retainers and install u-nuts and screws. The only forseeable problem in doing it yourself is that you may need to remove the rear tire to install the rear mud flaps. ALWAYS USE A JACKSTAND. NEVER RELY ON THE ORIGINAL EQUIPMENT JACK TO HOLD UP THE CAR WHILE WORKING ON IT.

LOL! Sorry, but IMO installing those things on a sleek coupe just smacks of something FORD, whose biggest selling vehicles are pickup trucks, would do. I always thought that to be a significant advantage of having a SATURN sport coupe as opposed to anybody else's sporty coupe - you didn't NEED those things to prevent rust from starting due to paint getting scratched, and with the polymer panels you were also less likely (due to their flexibility) to get the chips to begin with, which means you didn't need those things even more!

True, however, even Saturns get dirty and these things do help some in keeping filthy splashes off the car. They also look REALLY sharp on the car. If I ever get a page up you can see that they are a plus in every way.

Thanks everyone for the replies. Thank you LDB 2001SC2 I will be looking forward to seeing the page. So I will invest in some. I am tired of having a white car and the water splashing on it right after I wash it. This way it will help with keep it clean for alittle longer.

Having mud guards put on my 00SWP was a good idea. I had to drive down a freshly oiled gravel road and the mud guard saved me alot of work from having to clean it off the sides of the car. The wheel wells was a different story, it took me 8 hours and a 1/2 gallon of WD-40 to clean the underside but it looks just like new again. IMO get the guards!

Can anyone post what their experiences with the mud flaps and snow buildup in them is? I'm also looking into adding them since tar is building up on my front doors and fenders.

BobC... I got the L-series splashguards for my LS and they look built-in... like they are part of the car as it came out of the factory. No gaps or exposed hardware. Very nice.

The other nice thing about them is that you don't need to drill any holes in *metal* to put them in, so there is no rust potential from a screw hole. There are, however, a couple of holes that must be drilled in plastic (on the front wheel well). You don't need to remove the wheels if you have a right angle screwdriver.

I live in an area where there are still dirt roads, and splashguards have proven over the years to keep stones from chipping away paint and underbody protection. They are definitely worth putting on.
