Upon further reflection, I believe the injector was shipped with a bad o-ring (like maybe the size was slightly off or something) and that was the problem in the first round.

You think it would be a bad idea to get a non-oem fuel pressure regulator?

re. the fuel pressure regulator - I saw it vomit a little fuel upon staring the car. I'm guessing this is why I smell fuel in the morning.

If fuel is leaking anywhere out of the regulator then replace it. There are a couple of o-rings in there and at last one is shot. Buy the one with the screw on top so you can tweak the fuel pressure. Aftermarket regulators are OK.

The car will run better with clean injectors.

The ones I got are remanufactured - they are cleaned & balanced USED oem ones.
Well they look just like the oem ones anyway.
22.99 each.

You can get a set of BRAND NEW Bosch injectors for $150:

There are several upgrade injectors available, do yourself a big favor and do your homework before plunking down $$$.

OEM type. rebuilt: http://www.fuelinjector.citymaker.co...99/4699719.htm

Rebuilt Bosch: http://www.fuelinjector.citymaker.co...64/4706211.htm

There are more choices and also brand new. A correctly rebuilt injector is as good as new in most cases.

For your engine the New Red Devils or the Bosch 0280150973 are the best bet. The 973 is cheap and works but Bosch only makes these in batches and new are exhausted and used will be going fast. You can search eBay using that number and see what is out there.

Idle @ operating temp (>195F) much improved.
Will need to monitor mpgs to see effect - but it looks like significant improvement may have been achieved there as well.

Just to add some fuel to the fire here.

The base gasoline stock used for the E-10 blend is a lower quality than the non alcohol added 87 octane fuel. The 10% of alcohol has an octane rating of 106 and the resultant mix is 89 octane so you get to use a lower fraction of gasoline in the mix. Lower fractions will produce more varnish and gum, as it is usually called, than higher fractions. This is just plain old distillation process. Using a name brand gas that contains a injector cleaner will maintain injectors clean but will not clean already dirty injectors. Most gas stations are only selling the injector cleaner added fuel out of the Premium pump. So, this leaves you, the consumer, with a problem: 1) use name brand premium fuel, or 2)periodically run a canned injector cleaner through the engine. The conventional wisdom is that the periodic batch approach requires a 6 month frequency to be effective. If you are using the E-10 blends from the low cost station then you may find that you will have to shorten the periodic interval to 4 months or less to be effective. There are few of these injector cleaners that actually clean so that is another issue. What you will find is that the ones that function as advertised are expensive and few in number. You have to figure out the cost of the additive vs the cost of your chosen fuel and the differential cost of switching to a premium fuel and see which is lower cost.

i will now list the reason why my fi's were messed up based purely on speculation.

1) I bought the car with 60k miles on it - I have no idea whether the fuel filter was changed during that time. I changed the fuel filter at 124k.
So it is totally possible the fuel filter was never changed in it's whole life until 124k.

2) I never put in fuel system cleaner (techron, etc) until that time when I put in the new ff (~120k).

3) I always put in the very cheapest gas I could find at no name places and in Iowa for 2.5 years - where I think the gas is extra horrible.

Fuel filter has little to do with injector fouling unless you fill the inlet filter basket full of junk.
