Default Timing belt replacement-help-

My 92 SL2 (twin cam ) motor is about to throw the timing chain.
It makes a huge clicking noise when running and when i placed my hand on the valve cover ( facing motor ,left side) i can actually feel the chain hitting the inside of the cover.

My question is this: what is the difficulty in replacing this? I have done the timing chain on an old V-8 , many years ago. Is there only one chain spining both cams? Or does one cam spin the other? How hard is it to pull the drive gears?....i am at a loss here, any info would be helpful.---

there is one chain (not a belt) that drives both cams. i'd suggest getting a chiltons manual or getting a copy of the saturn factory service manual before attempting to replace it.

Do not let the chain break! Change it now!!! Much tougher job than a # 350 or # 302, etc.
dealer sells a FULL PARTS KIT.About $ 140. Repalce every part. dealer gets approx. $ 500 800 for job/ incl parts. get a manual & try it if you wish. Knuckle-buster of a job= 4-5 hours for a fist timer.

If you DO let that timing chain break before you replace it, then YOU'LL NEED TO REBUILD THE WHOLE ENGINE! Don't even START the thing again until you have a new chain in it!!!

okay here's the deal. Don't be scared of the car. It's just nuts and bolts. Your Saturn needs your help, and you need my help. Here's the basics: support motor w/ a jack, remove motor mount, belt, p/s pump, idler pulley, cam cover, belt tensioner, all front cover bolts that you can reach, and anything else that may interfere w/ front cover removal. It's pretty straightfoward, just use your head. Remove RF wheel, plastic splash shield, crank pulley (It's gonna be tight), water pump pulley, rest of front cover bolts, 4 oil pan - to - front cover bolts, and even the lower mount if you feel like it. Again, look to see if anything else is in the way of the almighty front cover. Double check to see if ALL bolts are removed. (there's one up top near the middle). Gently pry the oil pan away from the cover, and pry the cover away from the block. Pull that sucker outta there. Now rotate the crank so the mark is up top. Make sure the cam marks are up top, too. Remove ALL timing chain junk, like tensioner, cam sprockets, all guides, etc. Slap that fancy new chain on there, aligning 2 colored marks on the chain w/ marks on the cams, and the other mark at the 6 o'clock position on the crank sprocket, which you also should have replaced. Install those neat, expensive, new parts. That oil pump cover and bolts? Pull your old one off of the front cover, clean out the pump, reinstall the way it came out, and use that nice clean oil pump cover. Yank out that little yellow thingy on the new tensioner, and rotate the crank 2 full turns clockwise and pray everything lines up again. Easy, huh? Clean front cover and engine seal surface, seal it up with the stuff they sell at the dealership, (forgot that part, huh?) and basically reattach everything you ripped off when you started. Piece of cake when you know it all. . . . .
