2003 ION-2 Quad Coupe
Dizzy alternator!! maybe, maybe not!!

Having a issue possibly with the alternator!

2003 ion quad auto 2.2liter 110,000kms

the car rpms will pulse while idling and the heat on, then when i turn the heater off the rpms drop down and car will almost stall, and in fact there has been a couple times that it has stalled. also when the car is idling with the heat off and i turn the heat on, i notice that the dash lights go dim for a few a second then go bright again, it will also pulsate rpms.

The other issue I'm having is when i go around a corner the power steering quits and just when I'm completing the turn the power steering comes back, causing the car to over steer. I'm figuring this is an alternator problem. works fine when it only assists steering a little while doing slight turns on main highways, but then when it needs to help a lot when making 90degree turns it doesn't get enough power and shuts off. can anyone confirm or deny this? There is no power steering error on the dashboard lcd.

I called the saturn service department about the power steering(before i noticed the other issues) and they say it sounds like the steering shaft is rubbing and it needs to be replaced. $200 part, he said its not the steering column but a steering shaft.

any help would be great!

thanks for the replay, alternator was putting out 14 volts so that was good.

seems like the rad fan was hitting something, it started making a clicking noise a couple days after the orginal post, i believe the fan was struggling to turn causing stress on the engine.

couple of days ago the rad fan had enough and on the the blades broke off and went ripping through the rad.

long story short its in the shop getting repaired!

new rad cost - $250
new fan assembly - $140
2.5 hours shope time - $170
coolant -$30

total plus tax $730

so if anyone notices the rad fan clicking like it is touching something when its spinning, dont wait get it checked out right away!
