Default I'm getting < 25 MPG in '02 SC2. Friend gets 40 MPG in '01 SC1 (even more on the HWY)

I just bought my car used from a Saturn dealership. It's got ~32,000 miles on it.

I haven't changed the oil yet since I got it from the dealership. I've only driven around 1500 miles in the 2 months I've had the car.

When I first got the car I was getting around 28-30 MPG. Now I'm getting 23-25 MPG.

What kinds of things could be causing this and how can I try to increase my gas milage?

Edit: One other thing... I was told that even though the SC2 is DOHC and SC1 is SOHC, they still get the same mileage. Is this true?

SOHC gets better gas milage because it makes less hp and have taller gearing.

Your EPA milge is rated 26/36 for manual and 24/34 for auto, so your gasmilage isn't that far off. Change the oil, change the ECTS (do a search) and do a tune up.

An '02 should have the new style ECTS. So, it's unlikely to be an issue. If it's an automatic transmission change the transmission fluid and filter. The Saturn transmission has an external cannister filter just like an oil filter and a drain plug. So, it's no harder than changing the oil. Time for plugs. Check the coil towers to make sure they have no corrosion. Make sure your tires are inflated properly. However, the factor that has the largest effect on your mileage is how you drive. Fast starts and fast stop eat away at you mileage.

Well your gas milage may be different due to different types of driving or driving style. Check you tires too. If you drive a steady 50-55mpg on the highway I am shure you would get 40mpg or higher.

Driving a lot in town with a cold engine on short trips will reduce mileage. One reason the mileage declined could be that the computer has retrimmed the air/fuel per your habits and conditions. Also if your using crummy gas switch to a better brand.

02 SC2 was city/highway rated at 27/38 mpg manual, 25/36 mpg automatic
SC1 was rated at 28/40 mpg manual, 26/36 mpg automatic. your mileage may vary.
