1997 SL2
Default Car Stereo/Speaker Replacement

Aloha!

The question: Can anyone here recommend a good replacement upgrade for my 1997 Saturn Sl2 which has near sound quality as a Bose System.

The reason: I will be selling my 2002 Trailblazer which has a Bose System inside. It was standard with the vehicle and I'm selling it because it's getting expensive to upkeep (Hawaii = High Cost of Living). I love the sound and acoustics, and the fact I can crank it up without that annoying, ear deafening, bass I know a lot of people here like to do. It's just an AM/FM, cassette/CD player and I use an FM transmitter with bluetooth to play MP3's and take calls. But I am open to the modern features and I am more interested in sound and signal quality. My current model in the Sl2 is a Blaupunkt with stock speakers.

Mahalo!

I don't have a specific recommendation, and guessing your Blaupunkt is decent (with the limiting factor being the stock speakers).

But I have become a fan of the "mechless" decks. No cd player or moving parts - store and play your music from a USB stick or SD card.

Last time I bought a USB stick, was 32gb for around $5. Stores hella music. Currently using a 2 or 4 gb SD card which is quite a few hours of mp3s. It's a leftover SD card from many years ago, maybe from a phone, camera, or something.

What price level are you looking for? Much as I dislike Bose I know it's considered a premium brand and pricey ($200+).

If I were to buy another receiver today it'd be a Sony MEX-XB120BT as it has an onboard amplifier. Might be too long and likely too hot for the S-Series though.
A JVC KD-X35MBS or Kenwood KMM-BT328U would be perfectly fine, and you can ditch the stupid FM Transmitter that's 99% of your sound quality issue (though, with any modern Bluetooth enabled receiver you can ditch the FM Transmitter).

Amazon might be cheaper than Crutchfield but CF includes an install kit with most receivers, and car specific instructions for installing as well as Tech's that can pass for speaking English and knowing about their products.

Sticking a USB stick or micro SD card into the receiver sounds odd now...just stick the SD card in your phone and BT the sound from it, then you have the music wherever the phone is

I'm a bit of a weirdo - I use my phone pretty much only as a phone

I do have several gigs of music on my phone but I generally keep the phone with wifi and BT off. Battery lasts about a week (used to last longer but it is probably 5+ years old now).

Playing music from USB or SD doesn't affect my phone battery life

Thanks! I'll go look into those. I know Bose has gone down in quality these past few years but I do like the one in my Trailblazer. But I can't take it with me for the price I want to sell the vehicle.
