Default Mpg??????

So I have a 97 SL1 manual. I just filled up the tank for the first time. It's got 233k on it. I've done plugs and wires...I just got 106 miles for a quarter tank. I'm not sure what the capacity on this is nor what average mpg for these should be.

Mpg is mostly up to where/how you drive. I'd guess mid 30s highway, which is what your at by rough math. Some say single cams with a 5s can hit 40ish mpg from what I've read online.....so bonjour lol.
My tired twin cam automatic sw2 gets roughly 30-31 on the hwy@70mph by comparison.

A gas guage is not a linear guage it's just an approximation of how much fuel you have and the guage in the S series is the worst of any vehicle I've ever seen at making that approximation. Until you run a few tank fulls you won't know.

If it is like my '98 and '99, that would approximate to 34 MPG. But, wait and see at the fillup.

I'm lucky to squeek out 26mpg. Low point was 20mpg w/AC. I've replaced or cleaned everything but fuel filter and O2 sensor. No lights. Would love to get back to 32-34mpg no AC and 27-28mpg with AC.

My '98 SW2 manual gets 32-35 local driving, 37-39 highway. I've had a high of 45 one tankful at high altitude in Co., and that was going up and down high passes.

You can guess the explatives I'm saying towards you now. I filled up today at 21mpg from 26 last tank. I attribute some of that to idle time with AC on. Still, I should be getting 27-28 w AC

If you have an automatic, try Mobil 1 Advanced Fuel Economy In 0W-30...

I tried it in my manual, when I downshifted, engine braking was noticeably reduced...

O2 is relatively cheap, around $30 on ebay. Probably want to double check before shelling out money, but I think it can affect MPG before it is bad enough to set a code

i have a dohc 5spd and im getting 42mpg on highway driving 110-112kmh all i did was K&N cone air filter and im running 5/30 oil if your getting low mpg check o2 sensor i know my previous car never triggered the check engine light but the o2 sensor was shot and i could smell rich mixture from exhaust best way to tell if o2 sensor is shot is stand at rear of car and see if u can smell any strong rich mixture

fuel filters never affect mpg unless there plugged then your car starves for fuel and starts bucking on highway cause it can't enough fuel to motor

""roughly"" your getting 424kmh per tank if your using 1/4 per 106 miles thats not too bad i would strong suggest investing in k&N air filter and taking airbox out and adapting a cone filter where air box use to sit all i used was old abs pipe and adapted to existing air filter pipe and put K&N on it and i payed 60$ maybe for the K&N air filter

Buy pretty much any other brand of GM lines, from 1991-2002, and you will see gas gauges that are way worse than the S-Series.

My 1991 Pontiac Grand Am has gone as many as 300 miles from -tank ABOVE the "F" line, to the line, and 120 miles from , to "E".

My 1992 Camaro was similar behavior. My 1993 Grand Am was similar. My 1980 Malibu was nearly the same. Even my 1984 Fiero would go like 250 miles from "F" to , and as you drove from there, you coukd watch the gauge drop as you were driving down the road.

The only other GM vehicle I have ever owned, with a somewhat close-to-accurate gas gauge, was my 1992 Oldsmobile Achieva. I drove that car to Southport, IN and back to Niles, OH. But, the sending unit had a black-colored float, instead of the standard yellow-stained foam float of a stock fuel pump, indicating somebody had replaced the pump and sending unit with an aftermarket unit, at some point.

718 miles. The trip there took me from OVER the "F" line, to 5/8. The return trip took me from 5/8, to just below 1/8 of a tank. Gauge was just into the yellow, where the "Check Gauges" light would come on.

That was just how GM calibrated the resistors, and designed the tanks back then. The S-Series is the most accurate, out of their offerings from that era.

I'll throw an O2 sensor at it in the next day or two and give consideration to a cone filter.

If anyone has run a cold air, I'd welcome photos or descriptiin of where you put air temp sending unit.
