Default Where Have All the First Gens Gone?

So, here's me, driving around town. Oh look, a 3rd Gen SL2! Pretty Neat I suppose. Oh and another 3rd gen SL! And a few Camrys and civics later, maybe a 2nd gen SC pops up. All this time Im thinking to myself, where are all the first gens?
I post this thread on the topic of preservation. We need to take the fairly good condition first gens out of junkyards and put em back on the road. Otherwise all of the "classic" saturns will be gone soon. Trust me, I have seen what happens with cars. One minute your thinking, oh look another one, and a few years down the road your thinking, Whoa!
We as Saturn owners need to start a club, like cityhawk suggested. A club that not only talks and provides support for cars, but also preserves them.
(Oh and I do not hate 3rd gen Saturns at all, I am just saying that there should be just as many first gens. )

Quite a few 1st Gens here in Mn.

On any given day, I see an average of 8-10 S-series, with 1-2 being 1st Gens.

In mass once a car hits the junkyard it can never be retitled. So you can never register it again. Think about it the last 1st gens are almost 20 years old now, I would expect to see a lot fewer of them.

Yep, 20 plus years old and a looker. My car seems to get noticed by other motorists probably jealous of the dent free body. I'm looking for a 3rd gen and will keep this in the family so I can keep this marvel on the road.

The day I put mine on the road I stopped to put fresh gas in and another 1st gen SL2 pulled in. Sounded noisy just like mine. Haven't seen it since. Seen probably one SL1 as well.

Default Re: Where Have All the First Gens Gone?

Sadly, most of the 1st gens have already destroyed their automatic transmission and are no longer with us since automatics were the most popular option. Either that or the subframe rotted out or a collision dealt a death blow. Every year more and more of these end up dead and are going to the one-way ticket junkyard where you couldn't save them if you wanted. If you look hard enough the 1st gens are still out there. These are the manual transmission ones driven by people that actually take care of their cars which are the ones you still pass on the road today. However, after 20 years of neglect and abuse the 1st gens subjected to this have thrown in the towel and died, which was the fate of most of them.

That being said I am all for preserving the 1st gen body style coupes. My best friend recently saved a '96 SC2 after the diff pin blew up the auto trans and the car is now living life as a manual. I will definitely keep my '95 going for at least the next 10 years. My father also just recently bought a '95 SC2 because he liked driving mine so much.

I encourage anyone that thinks 1st gen cars look cool to keep looking on craigslist, they show up every now and then for $500, some with more mechanical issues than others. However, the 91-92 cars will probably be best left to die only because of the number of unique parts for them that are getting ever so hard to find.

I have noticed less and less of the 1st gen at the JY over the last few years.

My 1.5 Gen 95 SC2 is hiding in the garage until March. I'm thinking about driving it down to Atlanta Georgia, but not sure I want to put the precious SC2 in that type of peril. Besides, at ~200 miles per quart, I'd have to drop in the spare engine I got from 38TransAM just to make the trip, and that would not be a wise decision considering it would be the parts source for the rebuild of the original engine.

Unfortunately I don't have more money or space to collect a third Saturn.

At least you have the engine ready to go, and the car. I always liked the '95s for being unique. I call ours a gen 1.5 as well... just wish we had got the SC2 from the start.

To see some other enthusiastic 1st gen-ers, you might visit this thread.

At my youngest daughter's day care, there's a mother who drives a turquoise first gen SOHC (I assume it's an SL1, though I can't tell whether it's an SL or an SL1). As I drove past in the parking lot while she was about to open the door, I powered down my window and said, "Nice vintage Saturn!" I got a smile out of her.

I do see them from time to time, but sightings are fairly rare.

Lots of Gen 2/3s around here (almost exclusively sedans) but I was driving out to pick up my sister-in-law and freaked out, I was at a light next to the only Gen 1 I've seen since picking up my Gen 2.

If I track one down I may will have to persuade the wife into letting me get a Gen 1 SC2.

In a lot of cases you can get a salvage title on a wrecked/junked car. I had a Ford Escort before I got my Satty that had been totaled twice but was salvaged and restored. Car was great til the tranny did the usual Escort thing and got stuck in second gear when it was supposed to go down to first.

There's a Saturn JY out in Kansas. You could probably buy the body off of them if you wanted.

I have seriously wanted to do this, buy a scrapped car, salvage it out, and rebuild it, since I plan to work on cars for a living anyway.

They're all over the place around here. My area has a fairly high concentration of hoopties, and first (and second!) gen. Saturns feature prominently and in high volume on the local low-rent dealer lots and they're all over the streets.

The funny thing is, given the high proportion of old Saturns there is an extremely low proportion of Tauruses, Caprices, Cavaliers, Ares, Cutlasses, etc. from the same time periods... Is there something to this? I think so!

I spotted 2 Red Gen 1 SL1's yesterday riding around - I saw them at separate times and couldn't react fast enough to squeeze off a phone pic of either one for the Spot and Shot thread. How did I know they weren't the same car since I saw them at separate times, you might ask?... A HAA! - smartie! One had a space saver spare on the drivers rear and the other didn't .... and there wasn't enough time to make the switch between spottings.

I also spotted a nice gold Gen 1 Wagon a few days ago in the shopping mall and kicked myself for not being fast enough on the draw.

I am doing my part to keep many S-series on the road. I have saved and restored at least 20 Saturns from the junkyard in the past year. I mostly buy Saturns with blown engines or transmissions from Craigslist. We fix the cars almost to the level of a certified car on a dealer lot. Since I own a Saturn specialized repair shop in Tucson, I can put a lot of effort into bringing these Saturns back to life!
