Default Is this the right wagon for me? 95 SW2

Hi all, between my wife and I, I have had three saturns,

my daily a 97 SL1 Base 5spd, dead reliable, awesome Saturn... I am approaching 300K kilometres on it...

my wife had a 96 SL2, problems from the start, but alas no car payment for two years... woo hoo

we replaced her oil burning 96 with a 2000 SL1, got it for free, it has been an awesome car for us, and no major issues, no oil consumption to speak of...

So, my wife and I are a growing family, a two year old, and desiring to get a dog... Last year my local Saturn dealer got a 95 SW2 5 speed in on trade...180K kilometres on it it is an as is special... I would have bought it if the funds had been there.. So, to my luck, it is still there, one year later, and as far as I know still not "*******ized"... Last year it started up, with no codes... So what is the "saturn communities" thoughts on a 95 SW2 5 speed??? I am not familiar with first gen or OBD 1... can you read the codes on it, what are problem spots if any on a first gen? etc, etc... I would like to save this car, if it is worth saving, otherwise, I will be patient and hold out for the right buy on a second or third gen wagon... input appreciated as always... Tony

I know that many members on here would love to have a Gen1 5 speed wagon! That was not a common saturn made.

1st gens are the perfect Saturn (but I'm a little biased) and yes you should buy it for the right price. ECTS is probably the first thing you would want to check. Being a 5spd you should play with the shifter (alot) to make sure the gear changes are smooth, there isn't bind in the cables and no excessive play. The shifter bushing is a common failure point but you can't inspect that without pulling up the center console. On your test drive make sure the engine temps reach up to the 1/2 mark other wise you need a new t-stat. Check the water pump area to see if its been replaced or needs to be as its a common a leak spot, and check the radiator end tank on the driver side to see if there is any aintifreeze "runs" from the area that likes to crack. Check spark plug wells for oil and everywhere around the valve cover for oil leaks. Check the front subframe on the driver side where the control arm mounts to it for rust, as well the rear door sills under the plastic piece where they like to rust too. OBD1 is a good system that doesn't throw codes like "gas cap not tight enough" and "catalytic converter no working perfect" however it also can't tell you some important misfire info and other stuff but the codes can be read using a paper clip instead of a $100.00 scanner. I think there are issues with wagon tail gates and wipers but I don't have one so I can't say what to look out for in that department.

I would LOVE a white 95 wagon, easily the best looking and most functional car Saturn ever built (but I am biased to 1st gens).

You can read the codes on an OBD-I car with a paper clip.

'95 SW2 5-speed is considered a "holy grail" car:
* DOHC
* Wagon
* 5-speed
* Gen-1 body (stylistically lends itself to wagonization better than gen-2/3)
* Gen-2 dash/steering wheel
* No mouse belts

180Kkm is barely out of the "break-in" period. Why are they selling it "as is"? (Other than the fact that it's 10 years older than the oldest car most dealers sell, I suppose...)

I would personally love a 95 SW2 or SC2, at the right price but mostly because I could use an mp3 trans but keep cruise control

I think there are a couple interior parts that are one-off, not quite 2nd gen but not 1st gen

For anyone in Jersey or near-by looking for a wagon. Looks like it might be another "holy grail" manual and also has fog lights. Little steep but looks like there is room to negotiate.

Prolly want netting or something to keep the dog in the back and away from the baby, and also to keep stuf from flying around in the case of a panic stop or accident.

Update:

I am still dealing with the monkey at the dealership. he hasn't got back to me on a price, because he is persistant in "upselling"... PITA... I don't have an unlimited bank account, but I do all my own work like most on here... I just want a price, then I will thoroughly look it over... If the rear wiper is not working, can a new/rebuilt motor be bought? how expensive is that? I am just covering all my bases, before I even think of offering something... The other issue at heart here is that my 97 SL1 is awesome reliable for commuting 60miles a day, but I can't keep everything, you see I also own a 75 VW Super Beetle, so I really can only have one DD... I will let you all know what happens, but thank you for all the opinions and input... if I got a wagon, I would definitely get netting or something to keep all objects in check...

It's been there a while, right? Find out the trade-in value for the thing, offer them that much, and tell them you need an answer by Monday because you will be looking at another seller (private vehicle) next weekend

They'll counter offer because they want to make a little more money, but trade in (or a little less) is a good spot to start

The rear wiper motor is replaceable but probably easiest to find in a J/Y looks like 25->40 for a used one.

Just figure the car will need tires and brakes. Figure 150->200 for a complete front brake rebuild and the rears may still be good. Look up the wholesale trading price in fair to good condition and make the offer. Then keep looking.

There are few things more satisfying than telling the fishy eyed sales person that you bought another car while he was fiddling around. {rephrase as required}

$500 is pretty cheap for a car. Since you don't need another right now you can buy it and let it sit while you go through it checking for problems and then sell your other when you want to drive the wagon.

If that is the salesman's first offer and you hadn't talked money before, offer $350

But yeah, like spacmanspif said, $500 is good for a running car, especially with only 180km (that's a little over 100k miles roughly, right?). Check the cradle like you mentioned, start and drive to make sure the odometer works

I would buy it for $500 (despite my cheap low-balling ways )
