Default Front wheel bearings: Ball or Needle bearings ??

If I may ask, for confirmation, the wheel bearings for the front assemblies, are those bearings roller ball bearings or needle bearings (like one would see in a u-joint) ??

Thank you all.

I think they are ball bearings. Next, how do they assemble them...

They are ball bearings and you will need a press to assemble them.

It is a zero clearance double row ball bearing.

They ought to have used roller bearings. I guess they figured it was such a light car...

Wow! 646,147 miles on the odometer?

For a while there was an aftermarket high performance replacement wheel bearing that used rollers, epic FAIL.

There is about 750lb on the ground at each front wheel.

From my understanding of varying loads, ball bearings are best?

Roller bearings are stronger in one direction but isn't in side loading they are weak?

The roller bearing aftermarket assembly used a tapered roller at an angle to the wheel axis. The problem was the difficulty of controlling the preload on the assembly. As I understand it there was a high failure rate in actual use and a short service life. The original idea was to come up with a wheel bearing that would out last the OEM service life.

Thank you very much -- we simply never stop learning, from long term members on this sight.

Consider race cars, agricultural, construction, etc. Wheel bearings are one of the most stressed components, after brake pads. I'm talking constant abuse on a paved oval track. Maximum lateral G's. Back-to-back pairs of tapered roller bearings for wheel bearings. They provide the race-proven radial and axial durability needed to last. They probably just aren't quiet enough for a lightweight Saturn.
