2002 L-Series 2.2L Sedan
Default Lack of power

This is my 2000 SW2 with 42,000 miles.

I'm driving home for lunch today, and everything is fine. About half way home (6 miles total distance, so halfway is about the point that the engine gets hot) I dramatically lose power. I can't accelerate in overdrive at all at 50 mph without the automatic downshifting. It idles perfectly. It felt like the timing had been severly retarded (same sort of feeling as when traction control kicks in and you can't accelerate). However, this lasted for the last three miles of the trip.

Lack of power was noticable at all speeds. Engine still ran smooth. No SES light and the traction light was not on.

It was raining today and the roads were wet. When I started the car to come back to work, it ran perfectly and I had no problems whatsoever. I do have a warranty still, so if I can ever repeat the problem, I'll take it to the dealer to get fixed.

I did change spark plugs at 30,000, and I tested the wires this summer, and the resistance was normal on all four.

Ideas?

REWARD EXCELLENCE!

Just to let everyone know, I replaced the spark plug wires this weekend, and it took care of this problem completely.

It also took care of:
Slightly rough idle when starting cold
Missing when cold and raining outside

The car now has more power and the engine is smoother. I replaced the wires with XACT wires which are made by GP Sorenson. (It's what the local auto parts store carried....)

REWARD EXCELLENCE!

How did you figure out it was the wires? Ohms were with-in specs?...(i.e.~10k ohms/ft.)
