Default Question about daytime running lights

Ok, to be honest, I hate them. LOL Does anyone here know if there is a way to keep them from turning on besides driving around with the parking brake lever up? I've heard that, on some cars, they can be de-activated through a series of different actions. Is that true with these? I have a 2nd gen 97 SW2

Thanks!

1994 Saturn and richpin: I appreciate that! Thank you. Was wondering, tho. What side effects could come from just removing the relay?

PS: As far as the green ind. light for the DRL in the instrument cluster, I'm assuming the bulb is fried. It hasn't lit up once since I've owned the car.

With me it's just a cosmetic preference. I like to drive with the parking/marker lights on, and if the DRL's are also on it looks like you're being a butthead driving with high beams on in broad daylight. As far as whyother ppl don't like them, I'm sure there are many reasons

dunno about CO, but running parking lights only is illegal iirc in MI, not that anyone enforces it.

You could just turn on your headlights - parking lights would be on and DTR lights would be off

I'm thinking about buying a separate aftermarket set of DTR lights, placing them in the stock foglight position, and turning off the stock DTR lights.

Running parking lights when headlights are required is not allowed and is usually illegal. Running parking lights in the day time when headlights are NOT required is usually just not mentioned. Its not illegal either.

If you look in the How-To library, there are instructions for putting a jumper in place of the relay to turn off the DRLs w/o effecting the way the brights work. I did it on my 2000. For some reason I hate DRLs too. I suspect it's just that I detest being told I have to drive with lights on. I hate seat belt laws too even though I wore my seat belts before it was required by law.

I'm not quite sure why some people have such a problem with DRL's; they've been required here in Canada since 1991, and I'm sure in the 18 years since they became mandatory they've saved a lot of lives. Not everyone is smart enough to turn on their headlights when it starts to get dark or foggy. In fact, in the Province of Nova Scotia where I live, it just became law that ALL vehicles regardless of year must have functional DRL or they have to drive with their low beams on. It's been great for business(lots of work for spencerforhire Automotive & Marine) but a pain for the owners of older and US spec vehicles.
As well DRL's let me know which 1st gen Saturns are 95's; because the 92-94 ones had extra bright park lights instead of half powered high beams on the 95&up.

I don't mind DRLs, but I'd rather have them be reduced-power fog lamps than reduced-power hi-beams. On a long, night trip, I'd rather find out that I burned out the fogs than lose the hi-beams from constant use.

let's face it, some people shouldn't be allowed to drive

As far as whether or not it's illegal, I"m not sure, but I've been driving with only park lights on for years. Never had any problems. (And yes, I'm one of the half-way intelligent ones that turns on my headlights when it's raining/snowing/foggy.)

driving around with your high beams on is obnoxious. it wastes electrically and burns out the bulbs sooner. yes I realize they are at 40-50% power on S-Series but it's still your high beams. the first mod I did when I got my 02 SC2 home was bend the pin in the relay to kill the DRL. I turn my lights on when it's dark or raining.
