Default front end problem?

2005 Ion 2, 48K. we've been hearing a noise in the front end for a few weeks now when we turn the steering wheel. the steering wheel seems to have play in it and the noise is kind of a clunking noise. the noise seems to get better or go away after the car warms up good. could it be the rack and pinion steering or bushings? we had a mechanic look at it and he heard the noise when he drove it but he couldn't determine the cause. could tie-rod ends be worn out? thanks for any input.

There is a TSB for the steering column i-shaft because it has a little play in it. All they will do is turn the i-shaft 180 degrees and see if that fixes the problem. If it is more than a tiny noise, just go to a place like Tuffy's and have them check out the front suspension to see if the tie rods or ball joints are shot.

while you're at it, have them check out the control arm bushings, they also are a weak spot on earlier ions.
