Default Thrown diff pin

I have a 95 Saturn sc2 and have thrown my diff pin through the casing side.My question is, can I remove the transmission through the drivers side wheel well and not have to remove the engine and tranny as one piece? I would perfer to leave the engine in place and only remove the tranny. My book says to remove them as a unit. It is a 5 speed, if that makes a difference. Any help on the matter would be great.

Unsure about the removal myself. I know we did do a tranny in a '95SL1 with a 5 speed, but we had it done at a local shop. I don't think they pulled the engine, but they do have hoists and more equipment then most "driveway" mechanics have.

Best of luck with this venture.

not exactly what you are looking for, but yes, you can just drop the trans without removing the engine.

I feel your pain. Ive had the pin thrown twice.

Once I had it replaced by the saturn dealer, to the tune of 2K$

About 10K miles later, again, but did DIY, and cost about 750$

Has been good for 30K+!

I have the shop space and a hoist for the car, I'm not sure from what way i should tackle this yet though, either from the top, bottom or side. Wondering what way will be the easiest. The used tranny is setting my son back 450 and the labor I am donating.I have done a Buick Regal (no picnic) but never a Saturn.

i pulled it without completely dropping the cradle, so it can definately be done. it's a really tight fit, you'll want to get the cradle down 4-6" on the drivers side, which means losing both bolts on that side, and taking them down really far on the passenger side. you have to remember to disconnect the steering linkage from the rack by pulling up the rubber cover and removing a bolt (11 mm?). I can help more if you need it, but i can assure you that the cradle doesn't have to come out.

There are INSTRUCTIONS in the "How To" section on how to remove the manual transaxle out the bottom without pulling the engine. LINK: http://www.saturnfans.com/forums/showthread.php?t=29795
