Default Bumpers behind License plate?

Upon removing my 30 day tags I had discovered 2 holes that I was told here had rubber bumpers to protect the paint behind the license plate. I checked for an aftermarket replacement with no luck, dealer wants $10 ea for these (Special order).

Anyone ever had to replace these? they are simple rubber grommet style bumpers simple, huh??, I wouldn't be concerned, but My state insists on making cheap steel plates theat immeadiately corrode within a winter.

Me was thinking Home Depot or Lowes might have something,, all I found was grommets, how far do these protrude out?

Just wanted to ask that you post an update if you go with some grommets from Home Depot with a measurement of how far they stick out. I still have the stock ones but my license plate still rattles slightly so if the Home Depot ones fit/work well but stick out further I'd be interested

Oh I wish, I could use a few more parts too, I don't think there is a boneyard within 40 miles from me, all got bought up for retail strip malls & 'upscale housing'... I miss those days of hunting for little odds & ends, & at a very reasonable price too!

Lowes had a bigger selection but they just had grommets (bushings) which I was thinking of using & filling them with RTV (Not like it's going to be visible) best not using anything hard as to disturb the paint. The body diagrams at my body shop did not even show these bumpers.

Almost think it could be some sort of generic part, I currently am using a heaviier Bell plate cover, but the downside it touches the paint almost sealing the plate in.... but then there is the vibration factor which is what possibly caused rust in the chrome handle areas), it also pulls the plate away from the paint (at least I think), I'm looking for a more perm solution, in case water would get behind there & start the corrosion process.

Did you try going to a body shop? Surely the parts are fairly generic. They shouldn't be $10 a pop.

Like the other poster recommended, go to a salvage yard. You can probably find many GM vehicles with similar grommets on the tailgate. You may even get them at little or no cost.

Parts stores, such as Auto Zone, Kragen/Checker, Pep Boys, etc. I don't know what you have in the Midwest, O'Reilly? Have brackets that are the shape of the plate. They are made of hard plastic and keep the entire plate away from the paint.

There are also kits that have screws and the rubber bumpers, grommets, whatever for about $5.

The prices are crazy for these small parts...

I lost a rubber bumper for the gas door soon after I got my VUE and ordered a replacement. It was something ridiculous like $4 for it... I used one of the saturnparts.net websites to buy it.

Thanks all for your insight! like I was saying it's in a Bell heavy duty shield (like the smoke bubbles only deaper, it somewhat pulls the plate away (though the plate is warped in the center (cheap) though it snugs against the paint & which is a concern, I was thinking of applying RTV along the edges so it would not scratch the paint around it. (it really looks nice but again it will eventually damage the paint on the gate.. I think)

I checked Advance & Zone with no luck.... but they DO have a lot of that odds & ends stuff there.... but not what I'm looking for, I will eventually need to plug the holes anyway.... the body shop gave me clear 3M tape to apply over these... but they could not even find the holes or the parts in there data books.

I've had the same issue with the bumpers on my Camaro Gas door, as someone kept ripping them off (3 times) I think they only were 2.70 for the set of 2 though (at the Chevy dealer)

I can see $5 for the set, but $10 a pop is insane (are they that big?) I remember buying a small plastic U clip to hold the washer hose to the wiper arm... $14 & that was about 15 years back, counter parts man was laughing. ... he thought it was nuts himself.

These have a replacement part number? They plrobably are some generic part used in other applications.

Did you try a salvage yard?

I replaced a lot of interior parts on my son's first car ('88 Camry) and our old '86 Chevy Astro from wrecked vehicles from the junkyard. Simple interior parts were really cheap. I've replaced blower motors, seats, speaker enclosures, etc this way.

The rubber bumper just pop right in. No fasteners needed. Just a plastic putty knife to help shove the receiving end of the bumper into the little hole.

BTW, if you bought your VUE from a dealer, ask them to order the parts. I though all VUEs had the little rubber bumpers. My 2003 does, my brothers 2005 does, and so does my Mom's 2007.

Never really looked to see if I have bumpers. I still have the dealer plate frames from Saturn of Fairfield. Never thought about looking behind the plates to see what's there. Kinda funny because I had to look when I changed the plates. Next time I do a full detail, I'll look to see if they're there because I pull off the plates when I detail. Can get pretty nasty if you don't clean back there.
