Default 5th gear swap question

I mostly finished the 5th gear swap on my 98 sw2 today. I couldn't torque the input nut down properly, though--I was using a large torque wrench set to 111 lbs-ft and all I was doing after a certain point was twisting the axle, which was held in place by a crowbar in the lugs. It's currently torqued to something like 70 lbs-ft, the most I could get. How did you all do this?

Pop the shift tower off the transmission. Shift it into more than one gear at once. Then it can't spin.

If you want to do it by shifting into one gear, choose 5th and have a buddy stand on the brakes.

I wanted to fiddle with the shift tower anyway, so I'll try that. Thanks!

Not while in 5th with a '96+ without quite a bit more electrical tinkering...

I don't have cruise to begin with! Really interesting spec on my 98: sw2 with ac, but mt and manual windows. And it's beigey-tan! Definitely some malaise influence in the original buyer, and was the 2nd owner at 104k!

I'm waiting on a new trans cover gasket coming in tomorrow.
