2005 VUE 2.2L
Default 17" Wheels (Tire Size?)

I just got off the phone with someone @ Discount Tire Direct and he informed me that the only size tire I should get with 17" wheels is: 205/45-17

The package I want includes 205/40-17

He said that was too large of a gap, even if I eventually put some Eibach springs on ... and that it would totally throw my speedometer off.

Just wondering if he's speaking the truth here, or trying to get me to spend another $50 per tire ...

-thanks

BTW: They have a "buy back" program for the 16" alloys that are stock on IONs ... since I just got mine at the end of last October, he said my trade in value would be around $250 - $300. Basically I order the package I want ... they ship it to me, I put my stock wheels in their packaging and use their labels (meaning NO shipping cost to me), once they inspect them, they credit my card back the value of the trade.

Here's a good site with a tire size calculator on it.
It seems to me that 205-55 would be the way to go. Almost no difference in tire diameter. 205-40 does seem like a really drastic size decrease.

heh, I was just playing around with the calculator, I could put 225 35 18s on my car and keep the exact tire diameter as my stock 185 70 14s. Hrmmmmnnn, don't think those tires or wheels, or possible suspension changes needed would be too expensive, do you?

Why not go w/ the size specs of the ION RL those are 17's and i know they won't have a problem fitting.

Ion 3 stock tire size is P205 55 R16

Actually, the closest tire size for a 17 is a P205 50 R17 (or a P215 45 R17). Using this size, the tire diameter is off by only .19 inch. At 60 mpg, the 17s would register 60.5 mph.

The P205 45 R17 are different than stock by .68 inch & registers 58.5 mph.

See attached table I made....I also included stock Ion 2 tire size to show why it is safe to simply swap out the wheels if desired.

Thanks a TON yall!

Absolutely what I needed to know ... looks like I'll be going with the 215/45-17 's

Looks like I can get some Falken's for about $100 a tire (not too bad).

Does anyone have a preferred tire, or advice on what I should look for in a tire?

I'm a little partial to Kuhmo's mostly, or Nitto ... but have heard Falken's are good as well.

-thanks again-

I'd guess they'd fit without any problem. Same outside dimensions as my 225/50-16's. Heck, I think 235's should work fine.
