Default Just for fun..some car comparisons...

Hey all...

Before you start in on any type of lame jokes...with the recent release of the movie "Public Enemies", written and directed by Michael Mann...who also was the executive producer of Miami Vice...I recently started watching Miami Vice, to see some of the styilistic approaches that Mann has used in some of his later TV/Movie work.

I came across an interesting observation:

The Ferrari 365 that was used in the TV show (Not the Black one...just the Ferrari 365 body design...In General...)...has some looks that were borrowed in part on the Saturn Sport Coupe.

Take a look and see if you don't see some subtle similarities, in the front end with the scoop, flip up headlights, and turn signals:

For starters the Ferrari has a convertable option

why oh WHY was this never offered in the S/L-series coupes (let alone ANY coupe Saturn has made IIRC)

as far as the foldable headlights, didn't some coupes have them anyway?

the badging is between the headlights on the Ferrari, and between the turn signal bulbs on the Saturn.

I also like how you used a bigger picture for the Ferrari than for the Saturn.

yes, some similarities, BUT the Ferrari preceded the Saturn by several years.
Many American cars borrowed from Italian sports cars.
For example, the 1970 Camaro was influenced by a Ferrari, I forget which one.
There are only so many styling cliches to go around.

I would like either a mint Saturn coupe OR a mint Ferrari Daytona.... either has its +++++

The angles of the front end, and the fender ridges, harken. But the Saturn is much more "cab forward" than the Ferrari.

Unless Public Enemies trumps it, Mann's best film to date is The Insider. He made a major car goof (anachronism), depicting Dr. Wigand in 1994 driving a 1998 Audi A4 (which wasn't even made as far back as '94). There was a major "casting call" here for period cars for the location shooting of Public Enemies; it'll be interesting to see how he does with a piece going back decades rather than just years. I'll also have to scour the backgrounds for friends as extras.

Here is another car that I believe Saturn borrowed or shared some styling cues with, the Geo Storm.

Both cars were released around the same time, with the Storm coming out a year earlier. The Storm had a 1.6L SOHC or DOHC and later a 1.8L DOHC. The car was a 2 door coupe and had 4+4 seating like the Saturn SC series. A wagonback was also offered just like the Saturn SW series. The Storm is actually a rebadged Isuzu Impulse, an import which Saturn was likely trying to compete with (even though both companies were owned by GM) The Geo Storm was phased out in its best selling year 1993 because GM determined that it was cutting into sales of other small GM made cars.

Before I bought my Saturn I was looking for Geo Storm's but they are just so hard to find. A lot of them had major rust issues. There are practically none left in the junkyards and parts are really scarce.

I just thought this pic was pretty cool

I read an article earlier today, where someone had rated all of Mann's films.

I haven't yet seen Public Enemies. But I have seen alot of Mann's other works. My favorite still ranks as Heat . I also throughly enjoyed Collateral , which interestingly enough are bookend movies to one another:

Heat: Starts in a Subway and ends at the Airport
Collateral: Starts in an Airport and ends at the Subway

The Insider is pure Al Pacino at his finest. While not a bang'em movie with guns, it's more a war of words on paper.

I saw Thief but very late at night, and I didn't "get" alot of it... will probably have to watch that again....

Manhunter is a great flick and ALOT better than Red Dragon , in my opinion.

Mann has a way of using light, shadows; and structure to alienate his characters...

Those Italian car companies have been making quite a habit of influencing American designs.

Wait, I can carry 8 people in a Saturn coupe?
Yeah, I know it was just a typo.

I came sooo close to buying a 1.8L Storm when they were new. Glad I didn't, would've rusted away quickly here in MI. If they had better seat fabric and plastics, I probably would have bought it.

Whoops, what the hell was I smoking when I typed that I actually really like the Storms too (Oh, if I could get my hands on a GSi ) But yes, they have major rust issues along with cracking exhaust manifolds left and right. Also the HP ratings were lower than Saturn's (slightly) and they used a timing belt, and even though everyone says they are interference motors they actually are not.
