Default Proud New Owner Of a 2004 Vue V6

IMG_0563.jpgIm happy to be hanging around the Vue forum now.
My new baby was owned by an old couple that can no longer drive and only has 35,000 miles on it in excellent condition.
I searched (specifically for a Vue) for six months.

I actually leased a 2005 manual Vue but the V6 is really sweet.

One thing, the transmission seems to search for a gear. If they have never put new tranny fluid in it could that be the reason?

Default Re: Proud New Owner Of a 2004 Vue V6

Congrats! That's a beauty!

I'd recommend doing a 3x drain and fill of the transmission fluid using Honda-spec fluid. It wouldn't hurt to add a bottle of Lucas, as it should help with the fluid being run hot, which is common for Honda automatics. Some may advise against additives for the transmission, but Lucas has a good reputation, and I've used it in several vehicles.

I'm going to guess the gear hunting you believe is occurring is actually the torque converter issue that's common for this drivetrain.

Keep the fluid changed at roughly 25k mile intervals for best performance. With other routine maintenance, that little guy should give you many, many years and thousands of miles of good service.

(It wouldn't hurt to add a bottle of Lucas.) Redgeminipa Are you adding the Lucas Oil Automatic Transmission Fluid Conditioner or the Lucas Transmission Fix?

well, lucky us -- GM released a fix, TSB, etc. and EXCLUDED 2004 models!! yay!

http://www.saturnfans.com/forums/sho...errerid=11517#

So while this is OBVIOUSLY present in a 2004 v6 model, we don't count in the TSB. Thanks GM!!! You'll be first on my list when shopping for a new vehicle!

Reprogramming costs $115, just got a quote from the Buick/GMC dealer.I think I will wait and see if it performs better with just new transmission fluid.

2004 is excluded from the torque converter campaign... there isn't anything the dealer can do as far as PCM updates.

That should do the trick. Remember, these transmissions should NOT be flushed. They do not have a serviceable filter.

You'll need to do a 3x drain and fill: drain what comes out (typically 4 quarts), refill, drive about 100 miles.

Repeat that procedure 2 more times. This will get you to the point that basically all the fluid is nearly new.

RedGeminiPA,
Im having the Authorized Saturn Service Dealer(Buick/GMC) take care of it.I certainly hope they go through these steps as you have mentioned, something tells me thats probably doubtful.

If the dealer (GM) is doing it, make sure that's all they're doing. Insist they do not flush it. Also, make sure they're using Honda-spec fluid... I doubt they normally would, as the GM fluid is much cheaper for them to use.

If you're going to a dealer for the job, your best bet would be a Honda dealer.

The Honda dealer could look at you funny at first, but as soon as they look under the hood, they'll know it's a Honda drivetrain.

The dealer says they us the Honda fluid and that they have a machine that flushes the whole system clean.

Unlike normal automatics, these Honda transmission don't have a serviceable (replaceable) filter. Therefore, flushing could cause contaminants to travel back into the transmission.

My local transmission shop refuses to flush these transmissions because the filter can't be replaced (without a complete rebuild).

Good to hear you have the Honda dealer doing the work. They'll be much more familiar with your Honda-powered Saturn than the previous Saturn dealer...

Got it back from Honda, Big difference! You can tell it shifts a lot smoother.
So glad I got it done and had Honda take care of it. They said not getting it done until 35,000 miles was not a big deal but I live in Palm Springs Calif where the average temps in summer are 115 degrees and this car was sold here at a Saturn Dealership in 2004.

Thanks for everyones help/advice, look forward to a long relationship with this Vue.
