1998 SL2
Default failed emissions code P0405

The car 1998 SL2 with 168,000 miles. This car has just come to me. My first task was to replace the alternator. I sill need to put the wires back on the power steering unit.

I took it for inspection this morning and it failed emisions with the P0405 EGR sensor A circuit low.

I have driven the car less than 10 miles since I replaced the alternator.

I can take the EGR off and clean it, but I don't have symptoms I can point to so before I start I am asking for a little help from those ever so much wiser than me.

I pilled the EGR and cleaned it with carb cleaner. I put it back on the car. I noticed there was a vacuum line runing to a sensor. There are no wires attached to the sensor. I went to autozone and had my codes checked. No change.

I suspect my problem is tied to the lack of wires going to the sensor.

I am asking for guidance as to where I might find them.

Please be apprised. This car belongs to a friend of my daughters. She has said she is selling it to me but I have yet to see a title. I obviously have no manual at this point.

I have pulled off the sensor. As it was in the car it had a vacuum hose running from the sensor to the egr and nothing atached to the other end. There is a place for a pulg but I have searched high and low and am finding nothing.

Right now I am truly open to suggestion.

Your EGR is electrical, should not be any vacuum lines going to it. Maybe post a picture of what you are talking about.

I went to autozone and looked at an EGR for a 1998 SL2. It is not like my EGR. The sesnor and the EGR are 1 integrated unit w/o vaccum lines.

It causes me to wonder if this car didn't have a problem in the past and has an older head put on it with an older egr.

I have located a blue elongated plug in that may fit the appropriate EGR. My next and most obvious question is whether or not the correct EGR will bolt onto the intake.

Any ideas?

Take that picture for us. We are as confused as you are. If you are saying that you have a 1998 Saturn and the EGR valve taken off has a vacuum hose running to the top of it instead of electrical connections, you have a mongrel.

If you have the EGR valve in the second and third pictures then you don't have a 98 and could not have gotten the P0405 code. What is the tenth digit of the serial number?

The serial number you gave indicates that you have the 98 MY. The code you gave is good for 1998. You saying that you think that you ave a vacuum EGR is not right for a 98. Your EGR should look like the one in the first picture just to the left of the black bracket on the cylinder head and above the AC Delco box.

I think that at this point you should try to get us a picture of what you think is your EGR and the sensor that you are talking about.

That's not a '98 EGR valve. It's also not a '98 engine. At least, the cam cover's not a '98. Starting in '96 the cam covers are black plastic. At best it's a '94 engine or someone swapped in a pre-95 head. After '94 you couldn't put that EGR on the head. To do that in a '98 would take some work. Low Saturn would know what it would take but, you definitely have a frankenstein on your hands. You mention a P0405. That's an OBD2 code. Saturn never made an engine with that EGR valve that had an OBD2 PCM. That may be the problem with the light. However, I think you have other problems. Where did you get this car? How long have you had it?

By looking at the photo, it appears that the head is post-95 since there is only the "unconnected" ECTS.

The OP indicated there is wiring nearby for the necessary EGR.

How about a photo of those connectors?

It may be that the person selling this Saturn doesn't know the differences in Saturns and thought that any type EGR would work.
