Just Curious

What are the major do's and don'ts of breaking in a new engine?

In my Saturn manual it said to not drive at the same speed all the time. This was cool because I think previous break-in's required you to drive slow all the time. I think the break-in period was short too, 500 miles I believe?

I don't know if engine break in is that importantant anymore. When I bought my 95 SL2 new in 94 the first thing my wife and I did was take a trip the day after we got it. with 30 something miles on the odometer we drove on the interstate without changes in speed. This was a 1000 mile trip one way. Now the car has 104,000 miles on it and the only failure I have had is the thermostat and the egr vavle needed cleaning. This car has been completely reliable from day one.

The fuel cut off for going too high on the rpms? Doesn't sound too good, but it's there for a reason right?

With today's precise manufacturing techniques and more potent motor oil for lubrication. Break-in procedure is just a "Best-Practice" for owning new car......

Keep the regular maintenance up though....that's more important.

The method I would use is: Vary RPMS for first 2000 miles. Baby it around for the first 10k. Switch from dino to synthetic at 5k. Worked for my car.

actually, the red line is 6500 rpm. fuel shut off is 6750 +/- 150 rpm. (4000 rpm when not moving)

QUESTION: When one buys a car and its "driven in" from another dealer, say 200 or 300 miles away, does the "driver" properly break in the car?

Actually, the fuel cutoff is 6500rpm in the ION.

I wondered that too.. my car was driven from another dealer, so who knows how it was driven. When I bought my VUE it had 150 miles on it.
