Default my saturn story

this morning I was driving to school (a 16 miles trip). I was merging lanes on the 22 freeway when out of nowhere a Dodge Dakota rear ends me, hitting me so hard that I almost hit the car in front of me. This was the first time I've ever been rear ended, although i did rear end someone a few months ago. Needless to say I was a bit startled.

"Great" I thought, "a 4,000 lb car just rammed into me." I got out of the car and expected to see my bumper missing, along with a substantial portion of my trunk lying crumpled in the freeway. I look down, and my bumper was entirely undamaged. There was some fractured paint, but other than that I would never have guessed that I had been rear ended. I still took the guys information and I plan on getting it touched up with paint (to prevent rust).

I just can't believe how great plastic bumpers are. This experience alone made buying a saturn worth it. In southern california we have a lot of crazy drivers and I'm a bit proud of myself for getting a job and buying a car that can handle them all.

REWARD EXCELLENCE!

it wasn't an interstate, it was Calfornia State Route 22 (Garden Grove Freeway).
and you're right about crazy things, it's not uncommon to find a living room worth of furniture in the middle of a freeway, and people's lack of knowledge of lane-speed relationship (slow on the right-most lane, faster on the left lanes) makes things worse.

Any time you get smacked that hard, you should take it to a collision shop and make sure the spaceframe is still straight. You might not see any damage, but you might notice that after a while, one door doesn't close right, or a door seal leaks, or the windshield or rear window develops a growing crack, and you'll wonder, WTF is that happening for?

The 22 is super fast (well, when you're going against the commute at least), especially since they finished the construction. I'm surprised I don't see more accidents. Glad to hear you're OK.

Glad you and your car are OK.

To be on the safe side though, I would definately have your car's back end checked out by your mechanic. The last thing you want to have happen is, two months from now, your rear axle breaks loose and you loose both back tires because the supports, etc. were weakenend from this accident. You may even experience some type of electrical issues (back lights not working or shorting out). All it takes is one fender bender to mess up a perfectly good and operational car.

I would suggest getting out a jack and jacking up the back end of your car and examining it to make sure there is no "surprise" that is waiting for you underneath the bumper, have it looked at by your mechanic as well...you don't want to have structural damage on your car that will come back to haunt you months after this has happened.
