Hi, what condition are your battery and its connections, sparkplugs and wire set in?
Ya'll just got a cold front and lots of snow too be considered in why it's having trouble starting.
Was the car nose facing into the wind?

I'd put money on it being the ects. Replace that and I bet it fires right up.

You should have given him the Erik Tande method - ever hear of it? Pop out the intake air temp sensor and plug it into the ECTS.

My Daughter is going to school in Houston, TX and has my 2002 SC2. I live in Tennessee. We rebuilt the motor a couple years ago and it has been running well, but now she has problems and it does want to run very well. It has high idle and P0341. Her Boyfriend has been trying to get it going but canít get his arms around it. I am going to help pay for the work but donít know anyone in the area. Does anyone know a good Saturn Mechanic in the Houston area?

Thanks Greg

jwjansen, your '02 shouldn't have the faulty round nosed coolant sensor. Remove it for inspection. Replace it if necessary with the flat nosed brass one.

A dirty throttle body along with freezing temps may create a flooded engine preventing normal startups. One or two starts without the engine firing up can flood the engine with excessive fuel. Subsequent starts should be with pedal to the floor - this will tell the engine computer to shutoff injectors while starting. Described as clear flood mode in owner's manuals.

glowry, Saturns are no different from most cars, trucks and suvs with EFI systems. I would presume every new/used car dealer, repair shops and anyone paid to repair vehicles are experienced and knowledgeable about electronic fuel injection systems. Unfortunately, this isn't a requirement unless dealers and repair shops insist on individuals having ASE certifications, a national program to have trained people in specific areas of vehicles; EFI systems, hydraulic brakes, xmissions, etc. Training is either paid by individuals or subsidized by the employer to have the best trained and experienced people to run a successful business. The ASE flag may be prominently on display and/or individual wearing labeling on clothing to show their specialty. Experience and knowledge comes at a price over and above 'grease monkeys' that may or may not have electrical, electronic, mechanical, hydraulic and suspension knowledge/experience. Good and better repair shops aren't afraid to everyday challenges and should be friendly in discussing symptoms before handing the keys over to them. The chain stores like Goodyear and Firestone should have ASE certified techs/mechanics in order to sell a brand message with professional courtesy. Indy shops can have a world of experience but don't have the money to advertise their expertise. One shop that seems to have a following on youtube may be South Main Auto (no affiliation). This man literally and figuratively gives away info on how repairs are made as he videos his everyday repairs. He's confident enough without fear of losing business while showing how repairs are made. Most businesses do not give away the store, fearing loss of business if customers decide to do their own work after learning how to do things themselves.

P0341 is a false cam position sensor error code. The cam sensor doesn't exist on S-series cars. What it does suggest is the ignition system is faulty; ignition coils, spark plug wires, spark plugs. The S-series runs better on plain spark plugs that should be replaced every 30k-50k miles as a mini tune up. If you remember when we were in the Neanderthal Age, a tune up consisted of new or cleaned and gapped plugs, new distributor cap, rotor and contact points. Tedious and enjoyable only by diyers willing to perform periodic maintenance. Cleaning the carburetor was part of tuneups. With EFI systems negating any return to old style tuneups, we're left to remember when to replace spark plugs with many vehicles using exotic plugs tipped with platinum lasting 100k miles. A mini tuneup on S-series cars; replacing spark plugs and maybe cleaning throttle. Spark plug wires last anywhere from 50k-150k miles and are easily tested by spraying a water mist on plug wires as the engine idles; replace them if the engine suddenly runs rough and spark is seen jumping across plug wires. Wiping the ignition coils of oily build up or spraying with degreaser may help. Disassembling the two ignition coils from the ignition control module allows better cleaning of all three. A scrub pad can clean off hard deposits.

Suggest your daughter's bf to read these forums for background info. There's a wealth of free info on this site and only a few clicks away, anywhere in the world with an internet connection or wifi access. Even a laptop or tablet with bluetooth and a cellphone with hotspotting capability will allow field use of laptop/tablet.
