Sad Good Bye Saturn ION.

Well, production of the Saturn ION ends today.
After this all of the new Saturns will be Opels.

Good Bye, Saturn ION.

A wolf in sheeps clothing is still a wolf. An Opel is an Opel, it cannot be a Saturn. It is an Opel that just happens to have a Saturn badge.

So... what is the Opel GT? Oh yeah, a SKY RL with an Opel badge. A sheep in wolf's clothing?

Umm, that's not possible in our time-space continuum.

Oh, yeah, well I meant I'll have to wait until the Ion is as old as my Falcon is now.

Anyhow, when that happens the falcon will be 80 something . . .

Any pictures, news releases, etc? When's the last one roll off the line ?
Weird convergence: the parking space near where I work has had a different ION parked in it all morning long. They must know something.......

We have a 97 S, an 04 Vue, and an 06 Ion.

I've never really felt the Ion to be up to the "fun" quotient of the S, although I like the 2.4 Ecotec motor. I've pondered swapping a 2.4 Eco into the S when those engines become widely (cheaply) available on the used market.

Having raced Opel Mantas in the 70s, I'm definitely looking forward to the new small Sat coupe.

That is just as wrong in my book. (BTW the SKY RL, is "extremely unsightly", I have seen pics of it and I just don't get the appeal, oh well "beauty is in the eye of the beholder" .)

I still say blatantly copying one's product and calling it your own is a lousy way to produce cars (or Home Air Conditioners, or tools, or homes, etc. I know it happens all the time, it doesn't mean I have to like it and/or cater to it.)

Why can't Opel build it's own roadster, or why can't Saturn build it's own SUV? (Oh yeah, that's right, they used to do that, it was called the VUE. The Outlook is NOT an SUV, it's a CUV, that doesn't count.) Why do they need to resort to stealing from one another?

It's not theft, especially when it is doubtful you've even been within spitting distance of an actual Opel, a Vauxhall or a Holden, ever. Can't be "stealing" if it's General Motors assigning a particular product to a division that is sold under another name somewhere else.If you have never had it or experienced it you don't know whether it's an Opel or not.
The Sky/Solstice, etc are all "parts bin" cars using corporate engines transmissions, seat frames etc etc etc. Try and get past it.
Can you not just let up with the ION/Saturn bashing for one day ?

As I said, I don't like it, and I will not cater to it.

In my mind they would have a lot more credibility if they kept the Opel name.

(Oh, and I have been in spitting distance of an Opel, albeit 20 or so years ago when they used to sell them here in the US, "at your local Buick/Opel dealer", or was that Opel/Buick?.)

So don't buy the cars.No one said you had to cater to it. And if there was any equity in the Opel name in the US, GM would have tapped it already. Instead they're assigning the products to a nameplate that is well established and still has some credibility. Far better a solution than a G5 style ION replacement or a Torrent based 2008 VUE that would bring them to an all sheetmetal line on the cheap.
The last actual German built Opel sold here was in the 70s, 30 years ago and more. The last "Opel" available was an Opel built in Japan by Isuzu, based on the T World car from which Chevrolet got the Chevette.
Opel has supplied the raw material for Chevrolet, Pontiac, Daewoo, Vauxhall, Holden,Isuzu,Saab, GM Brasil, and Mexico. The idea that GM is somehow "stealing" is nonsensical.
There are still people who believe that VW hasn't made a "real" Volkswagen since they dropped the original Bug for the Rabbit. And there are many who swore Henry never made a decent car after he gave up on the Model T. And they missed out on some really good cars along the way because of their narrow view. [Sort of like what happened to the ION....].
BTW: how's that Opel/Vauxhall V6 in your VUE working for you ??? I bet it says "Saturn" on the valve covers......

The VUE is a CUV also. If it can't go off road over rocks and doesn't have a low range 4wd it's not an SUV (no sport)

Is there any sort of send off ceremony or photo op planned, some sort of acknowledgement ??? Or does it all just wind down to a stop? It's been on my mind all day yesterday and this a.m. just what that process must be.It really is the end of an era.
VUE production is still going on is it not?
