Default Ecotec oil filter cap removal

I must admit, changing the oil in the Ecotec is a snap due to the easy oil filter location. I have used a crescent wrench with success. I tried a 1 1/4" socket Sunday with little success.

I do have a question:
What do most people use to remove the cap?

Big crescent wrench. Don't want to tear up the plastic using a socket as it seems rather fragile.

If I can't untwist it with my hands, I use a big-ass wrench with a lot of grip so it doesn't over-torque the cap.

My daughter has a Grand Am with one of these.
I use a big 6 point socket, not even sure what size it is.
Gentle on the tightening, just a light pull on a half inch rachet handle.

I use a 1 1/4 " 6 point 1/2" drive socket with a 1/2"->3/8" reducer. That way I can use a 3/8 ratchet with a 4" extension to reach the cap. A 1/2" ratchet is too big to manouever in there.

I also use the 1 1/4" 6 pointed 1/2" drive socket. I couldn't get a cressant wrench in there on my VUE motor. But yeah, once you have the right tools it's an awesome design. I was cussing the heck out of the engineers at first though.

Cool Re: Ecotec oil filter cap removal

I use an oil filter cap wrench. I think the size is 68mm diameter with 14 flutes. It attaches to a 3/8 inch socket wrench extension. The price was about $6.

First I tried using a 6-point 1/2 inch drive 1 1/4 inch socket. That didn't work for me on my 2003 L200 with the 2.2 Ecotec engine because as the oil cap unscrews it rises, and the socket contacts the underside of the air intake manifold. The price for that was about $6 also.

I also looked into getting a 1 1/4 inch wrench but decided not to buy one because it was very long - perhaps 16 inches - and I was not sure if it would fit into the area where the oil filter cap is located while having enough room to turn. The price of the wrench was also a concern; it was about $28.

In my opinion Saturn should put one of these oil filter cap wrenches in the glove box of each vehicle equipped with the 2.2 Ecotec engine!

So few people change their own oil that it would not be very cost-effective.

I'll try your idea about the oil filter cap wrench.
I, too, tried the 1 1/4" x 1/2" drive socket (12 pt). I thought I had the idea solved until I tried loosening the cap. A turn and qtr. and I was resting against the intake manifold - stuck! issed:

The crescent wrench soon came out.
Just worried about tearing apart the cap with the wrench, though.
I rarely put the cap on more than hand-tight, and maybe a slight turn of the wrench.

I use an open end 1 1/4 wrench on the L and a 1 1/4 socket on the VUE 9The wrench won't work. Have to take the dip stick out of the VUE.

I use a 1 1/4 box-end wrench. Its about 14" long, so I put it in a vise and heated it with a torch to put a 30 degree bend in it. It works great.

I use a 1 1/4" 6 point socket. It has a 1/2" drive.

I also use a female 3/8" to male 1/2" converter, and a long 3/8" extension. Works very well.

Here's the key: I also use a torque wrench, set to 25 Nm torque (equivalently, 222 inch pounds) when I tighten the cap. Folks, that ain't much torque, and it's printed right on the cap.

I suspect that if the cap is hard to remove, it's WAY too tight!

Unfortunately they modified the 2.2 Lt oil filter caps and the newer engines no longer will accept them, no more flats. So it is the 1 1/4 inch hex n the middle of the cap.

Idea No more flutes?

Bummer. If I could design the oil filter cap for the Ecotec engine it would be shaped like a giant wingnut on the top so we could open and close it with one hand and no tools would be needed at all.

However, it's not the ratchet that hits the manifold, it's the socket itself. As it is, I have to jiggle the socket onto the cap. With that being said, I have, perhaps .050" to play with. Not enough to loosen the cap all they way and to remove the socket.

I just use the socket to loosen the cap very slightly, then remove the socket, and remove the cap by hand. Otherwise the socket will never come off because of interference with the intake. Same for reinstallation, hand tighten and then snug down with your socket.Hope this helps.

Wrench Re: Ecotec oil filter cap removal

I used to use a 32mm Socket attached to a 3/8" ratchet the same way that Bigbird uses. I then bought a socket made by Lisle specific for the cap ($10 from O'Reilly, IIRC). The special socket is shaped like an upside down funnel so it has more room around the intake manifold.

Cool tool. I wish that had been available before I bought the 1 1/4" socket in 2002.
