Checkered Flag Mileage Check-In Part III

Well it's been over a year since I last posted a thread for everyone to "check-in" with their Auras mileage. I think it's time we have a go again. It's been quite a while since this was last posted, and I think it would be cool to see how far everyone has gone with their Auras since.

Here's links the two previous threads to compare your own mileage (if you were around to post in them):
Original Mileage Check-In
Mileage Check-In Part II

So, if you would like, feel free to post the following:

-Year/Sub-model
-When you purchased your Aura
-Current Mileage
-Mileage from Check-In Part II (if applicable)
-Mileage from original Check-In (if applicable)
-Anything else you feel like posting!

Also, any non-Aura owners feel free to comment, of course.

For my Aura:

-2007 Saturn Aura XE
-Purchased 4/08
-Current mileage: 61,869
-Mileage from Check-In Part II: 28,738
-Mileage from original Check-In: 18,300

It's been 18 months since we last had a Mileage Check-In. I can't believe that in that short amount of time, I have put more than 33 thousand miles on my car. My poor AURA's odometer hurts!

I do have to say, however, that it has been a great ride so far. I bought my AURA nearly 27 months ago with 8,800 miles on it. It's been a reliable and enjoyable 53k miles.

It's also been nice to be around this forum, and hear about everyone else's AURAs!

2007 XR. 3.6
Purchased 01/25/10 with 29k.

Just got my Goodyear Triple-Tred Assurances rotated today @ 39500. great grip on these tires.

Only complaint so far is the big turning radius & faulty chin spoiler.

Excellent touring car with plenty of room, comfort & great hiway mileage.

I dont own an AURA, wish I did though. I own a 2007 ION-3 Quad Coupe. I purcahsed it new in December 2006 with only 2,000 miles on it. As of last night, I had just rolled over 58,000 miles. I love the car! ts fun to drive and very comfortable when driving long distances.

I wasn't a part of the last thread. I bought my 09 XR-4 around this time last year (July 2009) if memory serves me.

I currently have about 11,200 miles.

Problems I've had so far:
-Shift selector recall. Wasn't a problem for me but I still had to bring it in.
-Bluetooth phone pairing was being forgotten by the car every time the ignition turned off. This was a known issue fixed by a software update
-Parking light bulb burnt out
-A couple of rattles and creaks here and there but nothing more than my 2x as expensive BMW had at similar miles.

My only complaint is that this car's mpg suffers more from high speed highway driving than any car I've owned before. at 65mph it does great but at 80mph it gets maybe 5-10% better fuel economy than my 320hp twin turbo 6-cyl BMW did.

09 XE, owned 14.5 months, 12100 miles. Got my HVAC board replaced because there was a short (... my guess is that's just a diagnostic message the tech read), which was causing circulation lights not to come on sometimes.

And hoping more people start using TruDelta

Ya... but does anything maintain awesome-at-65-mileage at 80mph?

The laws of physics say any car is going to do worse at 80 than at 65, but my Aura 4-cyl 6-AT suffers more than any car I've owned in the past.

As mentioned... at 80 mph it only gets 5 or 10 percent better fuel economy than my BMW 335i... a car of similar size that produced twice the power. The EPA's ratings said my Saturn gets 25% better fuel economy on the highway. That's not true at any speed.

I think EPA highway stuff is measured at 60 mph, and is a poor measurement in general.

The fact that the 4cyl Aura is a "heavy car + underpowered engine" might contribute too the quick losses of fuel efficiency at high speeds? (For all the engineering I do, I ought to be able to reason this out, but I can't )

To throw an actual number, I tend to get around 29MPG (according to the instantaneous dashboard number) when driving 80. Wish it was better, too.

A/C on or off seems to make a significant difference.

I've done some testing at set speeds by resetting my average mpg and driving at that speed for at least 20 miles. I've posted some pics of my results here.

Weight actually makes very little difference in highway driving. It's really all about engine efficiency, gearing and most of all aerodynamics. Stop/go is when weight comes into play. So mostly city though I guess heavy traffic on the highway could as well.

08 XR purchased in 10/08

13,100 miles.

Had rack & pinion system replaced at no cost under warranty.

Overall, very happy with purchase so far....car is comfortable and rides great....no other issues.

Love to step on it once and awhile.....always surprises me!

I didn't see your pictures, but I am assuming you are seeing a drop in MPG when running the A/C. I did a similar test a couple of years ago and found no noticeable difference. I tested in 70 degree temps in the morning on I-5 in central California. Return drive same road in 100 degrees with A/C on. Same day and no wind. As far as I could tell the A/C used 0 fuel to run. I got over 29 MPG.
So, the problem must be due to the lack of power in that little 4 banger.
One more reason that the 3.6 was by far the best choice, for me.

A/C makes a difference in every car. Just more in some than in others. It makes sense that it would affect a lesser powered engine more since it tends to take a roughly fixed amount of an engine's power to run an A/C compressor. It's somewhat variable with engine power but mostly fixed.

I don't know what to say about the 3.6. Yours must be magic... there are many others on other forums (Malibu) complaining of 16-17 mpg city and 25 highway. Granted that's basically the EPA rating so I guess they can't be too upset.

-2008 Saturn Aura XR 3.6
-Purchased 8/31/08
-Current mileage: 7,400
-Mileage from Check-In Part II: 2,400 (on 2/4/09)
-Mileage from original Check-In: Didn't respond. However, at the time: 282 miles.

Twice since this March, I've had drops of water dripping from my overhead map lights / universal remote area. Approximately 5-10 drops each time. Both times after rain. From what I've read in this forum, it may be related to the sunroof drain and may need a delicate stream of water down into to it to clear a potential obstruction. Something I'll have checked out when I take the car in for service in August.

My Aura has been great, thus far. Gas mileage sucks because the overwhelming majority of my commuting is short distance but, overall, it's a great car.

2008 XR with 64,930 miles. I Recently changed the pads and rotors. OE rotors were of poor quality. Warping was a big problem.

I really like this car.

I have had 6 or so warranty repairs for relatively minor issues.

Dislikes are few: Poor brakes. The stopping power was decent however; I can't stand warped rotors. I hope my new ones last longer. The interior has a few rattles. The turning radius is comparable to the Titanic. My wife's Pacifica has a tighter radius.

I would not hesitate to purchase another one.

My highway fuel mileage hovers around 31 MPG.

Great information so far, thanks to everyone for responding! I wish my AURA still had the low mileage that many of you have!

Also, looks as if there are quite a few AURA owners that aren't regularly using this site anymore.

Keep 'em coming folks! Just got back from a camping trip to PA with the family, 30.1 MPG Average fuel economy. Nowhere near my best, but still pretty good!
