Default Replacing d-side curtain airbag

First, thanks to everyone who helped me with the engine codes I was receiving over the past few months (well, few years, but I began t-shooting them in Feb 2010).

A year or two ago, I was really pissed about something and I slammed the driver's side door wicked hard. To my surprise, I set off the side curtain airbag and have since tucked it back into the molding and roof liner but I'd like to replace it possibly.

Has anyone ever worked on these? can you reuse non-deployed bags from junker cars? I'm not so much worried about the safety of changing it, as I'll be careful and will do my homework if that time comes.

I just want to know if anyone has done this, and overall, how simple/costly is the process?

Thanks in advance.

3rd Generation S-series had optional curtain air bags.

You should be able to replace it, just like the steering air bag. don't know how to do it though. Most likely remove the trim and replace. But disable the airbag system first.

I have to say that this was probably harder than I've ever slammed a car door in the past - they're designed to go off when there's a severe impact to the door and or frame of the door - It's 9 years old and I'm sure I couldn't afford what GM would charge to take a look at it and/or fix it.

Slamming the door, no matter how hard you did it, should of set of the air bag. I'd take the car to a GM dealer. There obviously is no body damage and they'd be able to tell if the car had ever been hit and repaired. There's obviously a fault in the system somewhere.

I'll take it down there and see what they say. I trust your judgment, LowSaturn, because I've followed your advice in many of your previous posts - and it's been valuable each time I've followed it. I may not have it repaired, depending on what they say and what costs are quoted - I just figured since I finally got it to pass emissions again that I might start fixing the cosmetic stuff and make it last as long as I can.
I know the airbag is not a cosmetic issue, but I've also never owned another vehicle with side airbags and don't feel that they are 'necessary' given that the other airbags are intact.

Well, if it's not something you're dying to have in the car, I'd imagine you could cut the bag itself out and remount the cover with some sort of adhesive.
