Default Won't start Sometimes

I bought my 99 sl new and until about 6 months ago it had always started instantly. Now however the car will not start sometimes it will always crank and if its going to start will start right up. I have replaced the starter and the ignition switch any ideas On where to look next.

Have you replaced your original engine coolant temperature sensor (ECTS) yet? The resin one cracks and usually errs on the rich side constantly, requiring flooring the pedal to shut off the injectors for a start. The replacement is brass, covered in the How-to Tips first two posts including the two-wire connector that sometimes corrodes and requires replacement.

You say the car will always crank, so why would you replace things that are obviously not the problem? If the engine is cranking the starter is obviously good and so is the ignition switch. What's the engine temp when it won't start?

On my 97 SC2 the fuel pump will allow the pressure to leak down which will make the car hard to start. To "fix" this, turn the key to run, wait a few seconds, crank for a second or two, let off, and repeat. It allows the fuel pump to bring back the pressure to the injectors.

+1 on squarebacks post. no need to replace them if the engine cranks.
after you replace the ECTS and it still does not fire all the time, check the Crankshaft Position Sensor when it will not start up. follow this video for how:

The engine needs three basic things to run. Fuel, Air, Spark! You think its fuel. 1st, do you have any SES codes? 2nd. Have you made any changes to the Motor/Fuel system lately? The more info you can provide the better to diagnois the problem. "Always" state the model, year, and any work done that may affect your current situation! The more we know the more we can help. (by "WE" I mean the Expert/Master Members, I'm still learning myself.)
