my sc2 is more like a hobby as well. I don't need it but i do like to play with it. I have far better vehicles to drive but i still choose to drive the saturn. If it breaks i let it sit till i feel like tinkering with it again. i used to spend alot of time working on making it more fuel efficient but never with any real cost. probably saved me thousands in the long run.

I guess i'll respond to this as well since i can relate to this thread a lot. I have financed 4 cars in my life the first being a very nice 1998 turd green Saturn SL1 5 speed. It was first "real nice" car and that car never once gave me any problems what so ever.

Then i ended up buying a 95 Camaro Z28 a 2003 Eclipse GT convertible for my gf and then later on a 2007 Corolla S for myself and a hand full of motorcycles. I spent upwards of 16k on my Corolla after taxes and interest, when i had paid it down to around 3k bucks my ex decided to pull out in front of a transit bus and the car was totaled.

Obviously i didn't get nearly as much cash back from the insurance as i had paid for it and then it hit me like i had been under some sort of spell the whole damn time. I had wasted upwards of 26k dollars on basically transportation...I decided right there that it just was not practical to spend so much on vehicles as i could have used that money for much much better things!

So i looked and found a 2002 Saturn SL1 5-speed that literally needed nothing and picked it up for 2k bucks and have been driving it over a year now and have had absolutely zero problems! I am saving money like crazy lol yes it is not glamorous but you know what? I am not spending 350 plus a month on a car payment and another 200+ on insurance!

Some day i will go ahead and finance a new car again but for now i am really happy that i am making an intelligent choice and i have a car that is like a work truck..Gets 40+ mpg and can carry my son around. I guess once you get over having to have nice new things to make you feel better you realize that being smart about you're money also makes you feel good!

ps: Forgive my horrendous grammer...Been out of college a decade and not using it has taken it's toll. lol

02 Sl1 5-speed, 199k miles, run's great!
98 Sl1 5-speed sold at 145k miles back in 07

No credit cards, cash only. My SL2 is an investment in my fun factor. really kool little car and easy enough for me to tinker with so I really don't care how much I get sunk into it as long as I am enjoying it , Let it hunt!!!

Pretty much this..

I work quite a bit, and am on call every three weeks. Because of this my free time is hard to come by. Cheap? On some things. I buy the inexpensive stuff in regards to clothing and such. I do everything myself. ( both house and auto repairs ) My toys OTOH, I have no problems putting what I have left after the bills get paid towards my toys. ( home audio, shooting, fishing ( both fresh and saltwater ) , boating, turning wrenches, jeeping, machine tools, and I build historically accurate flintlocks, and play with old Wheel Horse garden tractors as hobbies. ) My SL1 falls into my hobby category. It is another toy which has been in the family since new. My daily driver is an f150 provided by work. , my weekend fun vehicle is a 13 Wrangler, and I still have my 00 S10 on the road for those times I need a pickup. ( since were not supposed to use our work trucks for this ) A big key to the above is I like to do everything myself, and I have no issues buying the tools I need to accomplish this. even if it does not always make $ sense. Secondly I like to stay busy, it keeps me out of trouble

When I purchased my SL2 used with 11k miles on it back in 2004, I thought it was a great bargain at $10k. Car was like new. Gave very little problems for most of the years I owned it. And yes I am proud driving this cheap car. The car body shape doesn't look obsolete yet.

Cheap is a misuse of language. I am not cheap because I have all my parts and am still in pretty good shape so I shouldn't break down any time soon hopefully. The people around me that I spend every last cent I own on have often called me 'cheap' and that is my own fault for not teaching them the value of a hard earned dollar. I could drive a new car but then there would be less money for those who call me 'cheap'. I smile to myself and feel a little sorry for them because they have so much to learn. I love being frugal and smart. I love not having to impress those in this world who are only impressed by a big price tag.
I have to think that we Saturnfans are very lucky in that these cars are so abundant and inexpensive. These cars have proven to be anything but cheap. I can't imagine any contemporary cars that are as valuable yet inexpensive as these S-series Saturns. Is there a Subaru or Hondafans site comparable to this place? Not that I care to look.

This is an anniversary of sorts. It was 23 years ago today (2/19/96) that we took delivery of my Saturn.

The salesman took a picture of us standing by it and then sent us the picture in a card. The card said something about how they didn't want us to buy just one car from them but several cars. Well, sorry but you made this one too good. Not much reason to replace it. Not even now that it is 23 years old. So, I'll keep driving it and getting more than my money's worth out of it.

The previous post in this thread is about 5 years old. How many of you all are still here?

I'm cheap and proud, but I joined the forums long after that thread was posted. My '99 SL2 was bought new. I invested $3000 into it and my son for a rebuild. He has put about 13K on it since. My daily driver is a '98 $500 SC2, which I've had to invest about another $500 into. I have put about 8K on it since.

My kids understand they never need a car payment.

On my second set of tires, about due for my second battery.
I quit driving the car in early 2017. Still have it, needs: engine cradle, flex pipe, tires, window slider block. Oddly enough the battery I mentioned was due stayed strong, so I never replaced it.

Didn't have time to fix, so I bought another cheap Saturn instead.

I changed five 185/65R14 tires by hand just to save $55. Five because I carry a full size spare... Because a full size spare is cheaper than a donut. but also because I'll never get stuck doing 55mph on the interstate with my hazard lights on praying to God I don't get rear ended with other cars blowing by at 80mph with 100+ miles to go to the next town, like I have seen 1 Ford Escape doing. Sometimes cheaper is better.

My name is Goggles and I am a cheap Saturn driver.

I'm pretty sure I described my origin story elsewhere but to summarize: had some money, wanted a car, was considering a manual transmission Lincoln LS or 1st gen CTS, looked at a 1997 Daewoo station wagon at $3650 that had a recently replaced engine and a pool of coolant in the engine bay, dodged that bullet, came across a 1999 SL1 with 176,400 km (110,000 miles) for $1800, dealer offered a manual CTS for $3000 if I gave back the Saturn, then offered the CTS for $3000 and I got to keep the Saturn, turned down both offers, found three extra tires in the trunk, happy ever since.

I've put on an extra 75,000 km (47,000 miles) since then and even buying major parts like a subframe, OEM engine mounts, struts/springs or an entire exhaust system are a drop in the bucket compared to similar parts on say, a CTS or Lincoln LS.

The help I've gotten from this site and my fiancee's dad has saved me so much and kept the SL running near flawlessly almost six years on. In comparison, my in-laws have gone through a 1997 Nissan Maxima, a 2005 Ford Taurus and a 1998 Chrysler LHS in that span.

I could only imagine the money that I would've had to put into keeping that Daewoo running, at twice the cost of the SL (the dealer wanted to get the money for the engine replacement out of that car... good luck!).
