Default What camshafts will fit my 99 DOHC?

This is about my 1999 SW2.
My poor motor had a bad day. I was havin some fun in the snow, goin sideways and everything. Oil light started to flicker. Then a lot of ticking near 3000 rpm, then death. Had it towed home and pulled the head. Catastrophic damage. First thing I noticed (before head came off) the exhaust cam didnt turn with the rest of the valvetrain. Found out the dowel ont he front of the cam that hold the cam gear snapped off.

+1 for a new cam, yay.

I looked on ebay and other places. Can only find cams for like 91-93 or 91-97 S-series vehicles. Will those work on my 99 or does it have to be a 99 cam? I even found a nice one at a local wreck yard for a 1996 S-series for like 60 bucks. Would love to buy it but not if it won't fit!

Also, what year pistons will fit in this motor? The top of piston number 2 was reduced to rubble when the ring stopped dead in its tracks and tried to tell the rest of the rotating asembly to stop. Now the top ring is laying ONTOP of the piston.

Any help would be AWESOME

Thanks,
Oliver

already checked that out, thansk though. Wasn't 100% sure so I wanted to ask. Looks like the best bet for the camshaft is one from a 2000 from what I've read. Can anyone verify this?

Thanks,
Oliver

I'm pretty sure you can use any cam you want. The main difference from a SOHC and a DOHC is the head. Duh. It has 2 cams to 1. I mean yeah pistons valves ect, but mainly the head. If I remember correctly all parts are compatible between all years. I'm not 100% sure, I am sure someone else will chime in and correct me if I am wrong.

I just wasn't sure, because I read many discrepancies between all s-series years and the 99/2000 year. With an apparent design change that lead to many incompatibilities as far as interchangability.

They have non-stock cams. A pair is 349. They have a longer duration and will create that beautiful lobe in the idle. The best way to get the most out of them is with tuning. They say they will run on a stock setup.

dude im not looking for high performance cams. I'm lookin for a junk yard/used cam off ebay lol. Like in the 60-80 dolalrs range, not the nearly 400 dollar range. i dont need both cams either and i wouldnt buy just an upgraded exhaust cam. That's what the 350 in my Z28 is for. I just need a cam that will make my car run again.

You might want to be careful not to go spinning your wheels playing in the snow, lest your diff pin goes flying out and you'll need another tranny to go with your cam.

Do the dual intake cam mod. Junkyard an intake cam. Remove the bur on the head and it will give you a slight boost, plus its still the same as getting a stock exhaust cam but a little better.

I'd ask you to prove it (spinning tires = blown diff pin) but I know there's sooo many people that have broken it. Mine apparently just likes me 'cause I'm not afraid to burn 'em up in the snow like everyone else seems to be.

I know the rockers change for 3rd gen but I don't think it changed the cams. Might want to check the intake cam mod threads too, they have a ton of unintended information on this if I remember 'em right.

The proper way to fix a S-Series automatic is to replace it with a 5spd O:)

simple solution. called saturn parts dept. and asked. 99-2002 cams are the same part #. i dont see how spinning tires blows a diff pin either. maybe trying burn out with bad mounts and wheel hopping like a ***** could do it. but just high rpm spinning wouldnt. putting it in 3rd and 5k and spinning em inthe snow is no different than going onto an on ramp on the freeway.

the reason everything went to hell is because going sideways made the oil all collect on the side of the pan and the pump ran dry for a few seconds while i was practically redlining it. I pulled the bottom end out today. #2 piston, rings, rod, rod cap, and bearings were trashed. (or w/e the 2nd closest piston to the tranny side is). rod bearings spun and overlapped eachother. this stretched the cap and bent the bolts. rings seized in the bore and destroyed piston and ring lands. got new rod bearings, rings, a new piston and rod coming and a used exhaust cam from an 2000 SL2. getting the oil pan off was the worst.

Both wheels are spinning without traction, then one suddenly gets traction, or at least a bit more than the other side, then BOOM. You have a new tranny fluid drain hole.

I also bet you have more problems that just a screwed up cam.

I know that the 99 and newer use a roller lifter where the older ones were just a flat tappet style. I would find a cam out of a 99+ engine. if your bearings spun have you checked the crank? and if the ring stuck to the cylinder what does the cylinder look like? I would imagine just about every moving part in your engine needs to be replaced, plus you more than likely will have some machine work on the engine. the rods and pistons are a matched set, if you change them change them all with rods and pistons from the same engine. also inspect your oil pump. I suspect that you were also low on oil at the same time.
btw #1 cylinder is nearest the passenger side
good luck

I have a set of 99 DOHC cams, but you'll be better off putting a junkyard engine in your car.

checked cylinder taper wear on top and its minimal, well within tolerances of needing oversized rings or machining. checked head and block for warpage and its fine. checken main bearings and crank and they are fine. cylinder wall that belinged to the destroyed piston is fine too. got lucky there.

is it just me or is finding piston rings a *****? I found a set on partsamerica.com for like 60 bucks or somethin, plain iron top ring no chromemoly but thats okay. but it'll take 5 days before it even ships. I was hoping to get them sooner.

go figure, i tear down my camaro and the next day i blow the my saturn and im stranded lol. +1 for public transportation.

Top ring is thin steel. The 2nd ring is malleable iron.
