Is the exhaust flex pipe really necessary?

I'm fixing up a 2000 SL1. The flex tubing between the manifold down pipe and the cat is completely gone. I'm thinking about replacing it with a straight pipe for a few months. Any particular reason that I should avoid doing this?

It'll rattle, bang around and break the exhaust system somewhere along the line...probably in a far more annoying and expensive place than a $30 flex pipe.

I used the Rol 520010 on my '95 DOHC, which is 2" ID.
I regretted not replacing the whole down-pipe/flex ass'y.

The flex pipe needs to be in place for engine/transaxle movement, Installing a straight pipe in its place will crack the flange where the pipe bolts to the manifold or the flange at the Converter.
