2006 ION-3 Sedan
Default Re: Have You Experienced the Ignition Switch Issue?

Here was the final disposition.

Was offered for $115 to troubleshoot then apply if things other than recall were affected. If only the recall fix was needed, the diagnostic fee was refunded. I told them to just fix the recalled items and if the problem persisted, I would fix the rest myself. He agreed.

Two recalls were addressed: 9100400 for ignition switch replacement and 9100495 for replacing ignition lock cylinder and key.

No work to the housing was necessary. 2.5 hours and $0.00.

First time I have ever been satisfied by the dealership service center.

For anyone else who can't shut their engine off, see photo for the green plug you want to disconnect.

Thanks to all!

Default Re: Have You Experienced the Ignition Switch Issue?

I am 3rd owner of an 07 Ion, within 1 month of ownership (July 2017) I ran into the Passlock issue, car wouldn't start half the time, then when it would start and I put it in drive a padlock light came on, and the car only drove with half power.

So I did a junkyard part swap the first time, I was lucky enough to find one with a key in it. The second time I had time I had an issue, the key would randomly get stuck in the cylinder and wouldn't release so the power/accessories would stay on and drain the battery, only way I could leave the car without draining the battery was to remove the ignition fuse everytime I got out.

Took it to a Chevy dealer and got it replaced, last winter (November 2017) I had the power steering light come on, and didn't have very good control of the steering a few times, so I took it to the same dealer to have that recall fixed. In May (2018) the recalled ignition part that was supposedly fixed started acting, once a week or every other week when I'm driving the key will pop backwards into the Acc. position and the car shutsoff.

Also if the steering column gets bumped while in drive, the key pops out and the car also shuts off (Worse than previously mentioned issues). Right now it sits in my driveway with a rod that blew a hole through the crankcase.

My mother owns an 03 Ion that I work on for her most of the time. She's had 3 ignitions cylinders replaced, the first time I did a junkyard swap, second time ot was replaced by a dealership, the 3rd time I bought the part from PartsGeek.com, and had a mechanic friend replace it, because both times the dealerships replaced it, it locked her key in the ignition just like mine.

I think after all of this crap I'm going to say adios to GM products, GM has been apart of my family as far back as I can remember, my grandpa used to work at the Leed's Chevy plant in the 60-80's up til they closed the doors. I've had family members with Dodge's, Ford's, Subaru's, Mitsubishi's, and Toyota's from 70's to the 2010's, out of all of them the ones that had the most issues were with GM, Toyota, and Ford.
