Default Here's The Saturn Sky Roadster

Here's your first look at Saturn's upcoming Sky concept roadster. It also gives an idea of Saturn's new brand styling. Note the grill on the front of the car. This probably gives a good idea of what the new S-Series might look like.

From Automotive News:

Saturn wants to feel the breeze -- and attract young buyers -- with the 2002 Sky concept, slated to debut at the Detroit auto show in January. The Saturn Sky, a convertible that can be reconfigured for two or four seats, is aimed at young buyers who want "an open-air vehicle big enough to carry their friends and their stuff," according to David Smith, Saturn chief designer. The Sky would weigh 2,300 pounds, powered by a supercharged 2.2-liter, 180-hp 4-cylinder engine with a five-speed manual transmission. It would be built on the Opel-derived Delta platform, which will debut in North America on the redesigned Saturn S series for the 2003 model year.

It's not as aggressive looking as I hoped it would be, but at least the styling is clean and uncluttered. Looks like an Audi TT drop-top. Actually looks kinda classy.

Hard to tell from the picture. Funny how they have kept the Saturn style molding on the side panel. Is this the brands enduring legacy? I'd want mine in silver, black or red however as the "sky" blue color just doesn't cut it for me.

Oh ya! Very nice (except for that color)

2300 pounds with 180 HP is a nice combo. Especially when you consider with some slight massaging you can probably over 200 HP.

I agree with the TT resemblence. I woul definitely go for something with this look. Of course if it came in at a price below 30,000 that would be even better.

8) Sweet!! Hmmm, let's see. It'll be powered by the 2.2 4cyl. on the delta platform, same as the '03 s-series, can you say engine swap!!
Ok, that might be crazy on a brand new car, but if all else is common, how crazy would it be for Saturn to finally recognize and drop this motor into the next gen s-series? Give us a SI, SE-R v-spec, etc... fighter and watch sales grow!! I for one would definitely make the trade to a '03 with this powertrain!!!! Just my .02, See ya!!

Not very original, is it?

I see hints of the bug, the TT, the new mini, even a little bit of actual saturn...sorry, its doing nothing for me. This will never get built anyway...although perhaps it will be like the even uglier CV1, the public liked the idea of a Saturn SUV, so they built one...maybe if we like roadsters, they'll build one.

Waste of resources, IMHO. I PRAY this turd isn't built off of an 03 SC chassis....the design would probably make a reserved, but classy sedan...but as a coupe, ala the current SC, yuk.

Looks to me like the Olds O4 concept, also based on the Delta platform, without he cabforwarding:

That Oldsmobile concept looks awesome. Why did GM have to kill the division with the best styling? >(

As for that Saturn concept...my opinion is that it's not aggressive enough, but isn't bad looking. Basically, it's inoffensive, not overdone, but a little too much on the "cute" side.

My fear is that with GM's moronic marketing strategy, where each division is supposed to appeal to some pre-defined stereotype, Saturn will not be allowed to emphasize performance as much as it should. After all, having a driver oriented car is Pontiac's role, according to the marketing geniuses, right? I guess that means all other GM divisions are for people who don't like performance. I'm sort of resigned to the fact that Saturn will become nothing more than the "friendly" GM division, with cute cars that have stupid cute sounding names, with corny ads shown on Lifetime television. Oh well, we'll see...

It also looks like the Buick Bengal, another GM concept car. I think it looks BETTER than the TT (which I think is the only ugly car Audi currently makes).

For those that don't get the color, I think it is a retro "tip of the hat" to the 1959(?) T-Bird. Check out this article:

http://www.thecarconnection.com/index.asp?article=4066

It says that "In production form, Sky would feature a power rear tonneau that could open or close over removable rear seats, allowing the Sky to shift from a two to a four-seater" and that
"Saturn officials seem to believe there may be a place for this youthful prototype in their expanding product line-up" so I think we may possibly see something like it for real!

bleh. no thanks. "center mounted instrumentation" sounds like a bad idea too. the instruments belong in front of the driver!

Heh, heh, I didn't want to mention THAT, but I've made my opinion on that very clear in the previous thread! Bad idea, I don't care who else already does it. It is not acceptable. Period.

Hey eRic would a convertible be more interesting to you if you didn't live in the great frozen North?
I have never wanted to own one myself and I am only as far north as Philly, where it is usually too hot or cold for topless motoring. Also most convertibles with the top up have rearward blind spots as big as a city bus.

Just the fact that they are showing such a concept car is reason for optimism, in my opinion. That is not just more typical Saturn, like it or hate it!

Just looking at it as the next S-series platform. I like the way the wheels are pushed out to the corners. A long wheelbase would do wonders for rear seat leg room, and a more stable ride. It has a clean euro style that has a strong look to it. I think going more euro for saturn is a good direction for the next S-sereies instead of trying to be like a japanese style car. Buyers of Hondas ect. aren't going to look at Saturns anyway so go for the euro style and under cut VW's high prices.

The supercharged engine should debut in some sport trim level though the very first model year if it is already developed why not offer it? Come into the market with a bang and make people notice.Even in the coupe and sedan versions if the roadster isn't going to be built anyway. The Ford Focus has sport models coming out or already here. Having a factory supercharged engine would seem to me like a big advantage in a sport compact car. Against all brands. And keep it affordable too.

If Saturn is trying to get intrest by offering a supercharged sporty roadster concept. And people like it. They better not just come out with something more pedestrian for sale. This concept is made for sport compact performance just from what we see now. Even if the real thing isn't a convertible (which would be pricy)A sport coupe version would be just fine thank you. This looks like a platform that could be a hit.

oh i like convertibles, just not blobby ones. the one i liked alot was in 1993 or 1994 when ASC did a convertible SC2 that had the top fold into the rear seats.

Hmmmmm, not too bad. A lil' too geometric too me though. I'd like to see smoother lines on the design.

It sort of does look like the Buick Bengal... Here's a picture of it that I took at the NAIAS in January.

[img=http://communities.msn.com/_Secure/0VQAAAO4dkNgc9dUtT4EaY1gVYgQdhIHBapGYdtgp1SOR7y7C1 t1s5Iu2MyyUEBeDW025Tvf5EwKTS3g3ExCIu5p9*HH32NrORl* jqAmeaUYG137OQ6uB74t6eY2uJQN*/ben-concept-2-smaller.jpg]

I loooooooooooove the blue color! Seriously, I think that's the best thing it has going. It would be (too me) boring and dull to see another red, black, and silver sports car. Saturn needs some more exciting colors.

I wonder what the interior looks like. Wonder if they'll try to do something like color match the inside to the outside, like on the Thunderbird. I know I keep plugging this baby, but if I had the cash on me, I'd get it in a heartbeat.

Good to have a Roadster lineup in Saturn. However; other than the niche of Supercharge I4, does it has a E-Z pop electric hard-top roof like in SLK kind of cool stuff?

Pricing is another crucial factor, even the new Mercedes C230 costs around $25k only.

2300lbs for the Sky with signature Polymer panels is not so impressive IMO though, Toyota MR2 Spyder with steel weights 2195lbs and Saturn can do a bit better than that. ;D

I still wonder if the SKY can sell, with current Saturn's image people percept.... ???

It'll sell (don't know how well tho), but not to the crowd most people here want it to be. Isn't SKY such a cute name for an open top car? Who else would buy into the "friendly" division of GM. Think: VW Rabbit/Cabrio and Beetle.

Those circular air vents remind me of the ones in my brother's Toyota Tercel.

I tried to imagine the instruments being on the center of my instrument panel while I was driving, and I just can't see any way that it could be beneficial to look over there rather than looking directly forward to see the gauges. Sorry, but I just think this is a poor design.

re. center mounted instruments.

A buddy of mine has an Echo. I've driven it, and I can tell you that the center instruments are indeed stupid looking, counter intuitive, and a certain "say what" detriment to it's sales. That said, functionally they're ok. You get used to it very quickly. It's sorta like driving a stick shift, most of the time you don't even think about it.

So I absolutely think they shouldn't be on any Saturn, just because it's such a seemingly pointless "feature" that I can only assume will hurt sales, but practically they aren't too terrible.
