Sad Help With intermediate Steering Shaft

hi
is there an aftermarket part to replace the gm intermediate shaft in an ion?if so where can they be purchased?
will a cobalt or g5/pursuit one work?
can someone provide the proper gm part# for the intermediate shaft for a 2003 ion2 manual/2.2L?

would it be worth getting a used one from scrap yard and how hard are they to remove?
thanks,jeff

this part wears out, almost always, so get a new one. as far as a part number, call your local friendly saturn dealership and they will give you one.

the ion is unique in many ways, I do believe this is one of them. a good dealership (GM or not) will give you the P/N and will cross check it with the cobalt P/N

thread ressurection
i finally got one off ebay with the correct part number.almost a year looking.
does anyone know how long this should take to replace?
my local mechanic says 2.5 hrs.

also a new steering problem hopefully related to the shaft also, now in cold weather the steering whines(or squeaks) when turning the wheel, could this be from the bad shaft also?
thanks,jeff

It took you a year to find it? you could have gone to canadian tire and gotten one. Its stocked at any reputable parts store, I can get it for like $80, its no expensive.

You can do it yourself but you cannot let the steering wheel move. I did it in my dads '05 malibu maxx, once you take out shaft the wheel can free spin and if it does your looking at major $$$ in fixing. So have a buddy hold it still.

the intermediate steering shaft is a gm only part with no cross reference.
cobalt/g5/pursuits are all different!!!
15799676 Shaft, Intermediate Steering (ION)

give me a canadian tire p/n for this(you cannot)

2.5 hrs?!? Umm, no. It pays 0.5 hours warranty time and takes about 15 minutes with a lift, figure if you do it yourself on jackstands a half-hour at most.

I mark the position of the input shaft on the rack relative to the seal with a black Sharpie with the steering wheel dead-centered before loosening anything. Then when I put the new shaft in I can set the rack in exactly the same position as before. Then set the steering wheel perfectly straight and slide the shaft onto the splines as close to that position as possible. If it goes off a bit you can undo the shaft at the column and move it 1 spline either way until perfect. The reason I mark it at the rack is that the new shaft is rarely clocked exactly the same as the old and you will get a crooked wheel if you mark the splines on the column and align the new shaft to that mark. Good luck.

it shouldn't have taken a year. any chevy/ prior saturn dealership should stock this part,or at the very least could have one within a week.

I am waiting 6 months for parts at my Jeep dealer for my jeep and the parts are still not in.

I am not going to replace my shaft again when it starts making noise it is just a waste of money. MY 2001 GMC Jimmy had the same problem.

Its not the positioning, its whats inside the column and wheel, theres something (clock spring?) its what connects the air bag too the electrical system, if the wheel free spins while you have everything disconnected the spring will snap and its expensive to fix and you wont be able to drive until its fixed.

@ kbg1, okay well ill test it out when i replace mine in a couple months but how come you didnt walk into a GM dealer and ask for the part?

True, you should be careful not to spin the wheel freely, but it really doesn't move much at all with the shaft disconnected. If you are worried about it, simply use a steering wheel lock or a seatbelt to keep the steering wheel immobilized.
