Default 1998 SL2 intermittent starting issue

I have a 1998 SL2 134K miles. On occasion after I have been driving for a while the car will not start up after turning the ignition off. It sounds like it is not getting any fuel. Then in about 10-30 minutes it will start fine. It runs normally once it has started. As mentioned this occurs intermittently. Do you think it is the fuel pump or fuel filter? Any tips to diagnose this issue?

Also I went to Autozone and they said my fuel filter never needs replacement but I have seen richpin's video on how to replace. Any thoughts on why AZ's computer says the fuel filter never needs replacement. Thanks

Scott

The service schedule in your owner's manual is more accurate and complete than anything they have at Autozone. Your car's fuel filter should be replaced every 100,000 miles.

As for the no-start, you should first determine whether it's spark or fuel (or something else) that's causing it.

Thanks for the reply. It sounds reasonable about the fuel filter replacement.

regarding spark or fuel as the cause for not starting. How could the spark be intermittent? I can see if the filter or pump is going bad. Thanks again.

Common no-spark issue with our cars: the crankshaft position sensor (CPS) fails as the engine gets hot. When it cools, it works again.

Quick & dirty spark test - remove the #1 and #4 spark plug wires from the coil they share. Observe as an assitant turns the key to START. You should see spark jumping between the coil tower. 'Course, the test is only relevant during the no-start episode.

The 98's had a thing for intermittant crank position sensors. As madpogue said test for spark when the car dies and will not start. No spark replace the crank sensor.
