Default 1992 Saturn Intermittent Hard Start

1992 Saturn Twin Cam motor, 150K mi., at times requires excessive cranking to start. Most times it'll light right up, but sometimes it will require 20 sec. of cranking to start. No codes, fuel filter changed and pressure within specs., but again issue is intermittent. Once started, it runs fine, not loaded up, no rough idle don't have to clear it out. Seems to occur more on startup after it has been run and sits for a while. Changed plugs 8K ago with NGKs from saturn. I'm thinking crank sensor.

Saw this before on a 1997 SC2 as well as on a 1996 Ford Taurus. It got worse and turned out to be the fuel pump in both cases. It has something that causes it to not build pressure or bleed off pressure at bad times.

Bad CPS will not let the engine run at all and they ususaly fail once and for good not intermitent.

Maybe! Try the coil test by removing the coil wires while having someone crank the engine; no spark jumping across the coil towers is a sure sign of (in your case) an intermittent cps failure. Sparking at any time may mean that the coils and ignition module need some wirebrushing of bare metal to clean off built up corrosion. Scotch-briting the towers shiny and coating them with dielectric grease will prevent furure corrosion. Use some on the bare metal of the coil, bolts, and ignition module or plain grease for the same corrosion prevention. The bolts ground everything so wirebrush them too.

Now, if you see sparks from the coil test, drop the idea of a cps failure! You haven't posted on whether or not you replaced the original two-wire engine coolant temperature sensor (ECTS). Look in the How-to Tips library's first two posts. The coolant sensor usually fails by keeping the engine in a rich air/fuel mixture that can flood the engine on every start making it hard to start. Its a cheap part, less than $20. Just make sure its brass and the two-wire connector isn't corroded otherwise replace it too.

You haven't read of the intermittent cps failures then. Search the threads as you'll read of excellent examples of intermittent cps failures. They do fail with very erratic behavior and do confuse many that have come here with the same symptoms and leave here with more trust in their reliable cars once again, after pulling their hair out before getting straight advice.

Same exact symptopms as my 1993 SW2. It was the fuel pressure regulator. It would allow fuel to drain back to the tank after sitting a while not keeping the fuel rail pressurized. So at start up the system would have to fully pressurize before the car would start.

Thanks for the suggestions and yes I did replace the ECTS and connector. Most times it will light right up, but sometimes requires a lot of cranking, but no black smoke and don't have to clear it out. What makes it difficult is it's intermittent, crank long enough and it will start or key off, key on and it will start, guess I'll just have to check for spark and record fuel pressure at various times.
