Default Bear with me

Im no mechanic, just got a cheap Saturn that runs like a top, but got a few lil noises. im new to the forum, so I reckon I just jump right in, I been readin a bit, but I may need answers quicker than I can get to em myself, hehe. Got a 97 SL, or SL2, not exactly sure, I can find SL under the hood, but not SL2? when coasting or low acceleration aka parking lots, etc, a slight tapping from the left strut area, not loud enough to be a knock, not coming from the boot area and the boot and bars all look fine? Sometimes it does it a lot, and sometimes none at all? Also have some vibration when the car downshifts, or revs, all the way thru the steering wheel, other times, not at all?I'd like to fix these obviously minor things as I got the car cheap, but what the local mechanics want for diagnostic checks, etc, I thought I'd ask on here. I got a chiltons manual, lol. 1997 SL(2) 4spd automatic?DOHC. Sorry if these are stupid questions. thanks for your time

Do a fluid change and filter change on the trans. Use a Universal Dexron/Mercon ATF and definitely not Dexron - VI, use a WIX or NAPA filter.

Are the plugs on the front of the engine or on top?

couple of rough guesses would be a motor mount for vibration and a sway bar bushing on the other..........so far, that's what I got jotted down. Thanks again.

Then it is a SL-2 and you should be using NGK BKR5ESA-11 plugs, no platinum plugs...

thank you sir, greatly appreciated. it seems the motor mounts aren't that hard, per se, hehe. I def feel it on the driver side, not the passenger side, so im guessin that's the transmission one? Looks like I be reading a lot tonight

My opinion on compression tests is that they are useful for diagnosing burned valves and such, but otherwise rather useless unless performed by a skilled operator with a higher end gauge.

If the engine isn't giving you problems 178 is just fine.
